reRevolvers can fire three ways (with the exemption of some very rare and pricey oddities). The first is single-action (like a "cowboy" revolver).
The hammer must be ****** for every shot. The second is a double-action revolver. These revolvers can fire with one long trigger pull that rotates the cylinder then brings the hammer down to fire the weapon. They can also be used in single-action mode for slow-fire target shooting.
The last is a double-action only revolver. These revolvers have "spurless" or concealed hammers and every trigger pull is long and there is no cocking available for target shooting.

I am very fond of S&W J-frame revolvers, both the .38 SPL models and the .357 Magnum models. After over 30 years of packing a handgun on a daily basis, I've come to the conclusion that the two absolute best pocket revolvers are the S&W Bodyguard Series (M-49, M-638 & M-649) and the S&W Centennial Series (M-40, M-442, & M-640). The Bodyguard Series have a shrouded hammer, thus retaining single-action capability. The Centennial Series are true hammerless revolvers. Both models offer a smooth profile with a snag-free draw. Both may be fired reliably from within a pocket or purse without the lining interfering with the hammer. I strongly urge you to ignore the skeeterweight titanium, scandium, unobtanium or some other weightless metal. Especially if you opt for a .357 Magnum model. My Always Gun, an S&W M-640 weighs almost 25-ounces and recoil is pretty danged stout. I can't imagine how painful it would be to squeeze off a full-power magnum load in a revolver weighting 13-ounces. Doc

JD is correct about double and single action revolvers, but what is your question?

The double action revolver can be manually ****** then shot or shot merely by squeezing the trigger. The single action only revolver must be manually ****** each time it is shot.

Single Action= Means cocking the hammer back and firing..
Double Action=Means just pulling the trigger and the hammer comes back and fires without being ****** first.

Some guns are single action only (They can only fire by cocking the hammer back first)

Most other guns are both single and double action combined (With the exception of .45 automatics that do not fire double action.)

single action means you have to pull back the hammer before each shot. a double action you just squeeze the trigger.
