I have my carry license, and I am a firm supporter of the 2nd amendment. However, some of what you say here disturbs me.
If you are "prone to Road Rage..for sure", then I would advise against carrying any kind of firearm. Far too many people lose their cool and end up making victims of people who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A hot-head is bad enough, a hot-head with a gun is even worse. Do us all a favor and stick to pepper spray and a cell phone.

Your gender shouldn't affect people's answers. It might affect your perceived vulnerability, but it shouldn't change the effectiveness or otherwise of what you choose to protect yourself with if you come to needing it.
First, your most useful defense is communications. Cell phone or even a radio, CB or ham depending on your area. I actually got my extra class ham license so I can use HF radio in areas where there's no cell phone coverage. If an assailant sees you on a radio or cell phone they may change their mind before there's ever a problem. For urban areas the phone is probably all you need, keep 911 on speed dial.
Next things you are likely to need to keep yourself alive are a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. I've never needed to draw my gun, but I've put out a car fire and patched up a few cuts.
So now the phone didn't help and it's time for the next step. Go for the hand gun, choose something big that you can shoot accurately. A small gun might not be seen by an assailant and might not stop them if you need it. If all you do is really irritate them then your chances of surviving the encounter are correspondingly reduced. I use a Glock 20 when concealment isn't important and a mid sized 45 when it is. Looking down the barrel of a gun at the cold eyes of a person willing to use it will put most people off and end the encounter. If it doesn't... well, that's their problem.
Pepper spray is of questionable use, it has minimal range and doesn't affect everyone, some habitual fellons even condition themselves against its effects. You also stand a reasonable chance of getting it back in your face if the wind is blowing the wrong way. The foaming types may work better, some police forces think so, they keep the agent on the target. You could at least keep it around for detering dogs without having to kill them.
Most likely you'll never need anything, but chance favors the prepared mind.
(Hah! If you get road rage then a weapon is the last thing you need.)

I'd never keep a gun in a car. What if your car is burglarized or stolen? Pepper spray will get into your air conditioning rendering it useless until it 'wears' off.
If you can legally possess a firearm then get a concealed carry permit or comply with your State's firearms regulations concerning carrying of a gun. Then you'll be good to carry a defensive firearm in your vehicle. NOTE: In most States anything found within arm's reach of the driver (gun, knife, club, etc.) can be construed as a weapon and the driver can be charge with unlawfully carrying a weapon if the local DA takes the charges.

If you are prone to Road Rage, you should not have a weapon of any sort in your car. At least not until you learn to control your temper.

A box of condoms? Sorry, couldn't resist.
What sort of situation are you planning against, and protecting yourself from?
I'd say flexibility is important, and a combination of weapons is best. Capsaicin risks spraying yourself in your car. A pistol may not always be warranted. There may be circumstances in which a hairpin or even a flashlight is best.
