No. Even with rifled slugs a 10guage wouldn't be able to penetrate far enough into a rhino to give a lethal effect in a time that would be likely to prevent it turning you into a blood soaked mess.

You need to look for a rifle that can fire a heavy solid shot, like the Barnes Banded Solids, at a reasonably high velocity.

You can hunt on safari with a bolt or even single shot gun because a professional hunter will back you up with a very big and heavy double rifle in one of the major calibers. I'm not going to pick favorites but they all look like big cigars.

By the way the 577 T-Rex is a caliber developed by accuratereloadoing dot com for the specific purpose of producing unmanageable recoil, it is a joke and not a hunting round. Look at their recoil page under the FAQs, the only thing worse than that to shoot is an overloaded .700 Nitro Express.

I would not hunt Rhino with a shotgun. I'd use a dangerous game rifle. The minimum caliber is the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. I just happen to own a .458 Winchester Magnum so that is probably what I would use. From what I know of Rhino, the hide is probably too tough for even a 10 gauge shotgun. A good double rifle in at least .470 Nitro Express with solid bullets would be even better.

Good luck.

....And then you would be trampled to death. For serious multiple ton big game in Africa you use double barrel big bore guns simply called double guns. These come chambered in in calibers like .477 Nitro Express, .585 Nyatti, .577 Tyranosaurs Rex, and 600 Nitro Express. A 10 gauge travels to slow and has horrible pentration ability. A shotgun slug works by basically slamming into an animal so hard it causes fatal blunt force tramua. A 10 gauge would be under gunned in medium to large bear let alone a rihino. The smaler end of calibers would .400s to .500s. A rihno can weigh 2+ tons. I an animal that big charges you want to be able to have a gun that can drop it with adrenaline going. A 10 gauge simply can't. Besides I'm pretty sure all Rhino populations are endagered so that hunt ain't gonna happen any time soon.

KArl Wolf, that is the dumbest asnwer ive ever heard. What is buckblast? Its buckshot, and that wont hardly kill a deer half the time. It defintly wont kill a rhino, and a 12 gauge is a gun, not a shell. Maybe you meant slugs or something, but it still wont kill a Rhino. the only shotgun that would kill a Rhino would be those 2 and 4 gauges the duck hunters slapped on thier boats years ago and could kill 80 ducks with one shot. I doubt they make ammo for those though! Any big, dangerous game caliber will work, like the .400's and up.

It's been my general experience that pump action firearms make lousy hunting rifles. The fore-ends are too loose to take a solid aim with; and, oftentimes, the action bar(s) seem to release with the shot and your follow-through isn't what it should be. Before I'd take a 30-30, I'd go 35 Remington. The 25-06 is good for everything from varmints to large deer; and it's one of the better long-range calibers. If you plan to do most of your shooting inside, say, 150 yards a 35 Rem will do you just fine and the ammo is plentiful. If you plan on shooting at 200 yards + the 25-06 would be a better choice; but you'll have to stock up on ammo ahead of time. (Which most of us do anyway!) ;)

No you won't.

Most African nations have laws that regulate the caliber needed for dangerous game, and shotguns don't qualify for anything other than leopard.

You would use, at your PH's insistance, a .375 H&H, a .404 NE, a .416 Rigby, .470 NE, or larger. You would be required to use solid, deep penetrating bullets.

Professional Hunters have an aversion to having to report clients stomped into mush before their eyes. It tends to cost them their licenses if it happens often.

I know this is not an answer, please forgive me Mr. Questioner.

I simply had to say:

Karl Wolf - what the phuck planet are you from? Do you even know what a projectile is? Buckblast (backblast) is for recoilless rockets and has NOTHING to do with hunting of any kind.

Sorry, just had to have my say. You can kick me now....

A "RINO" is a Republican In Name Only, someone like John McCain. Please don't hunt Republicans, or Democrats for that matter.

For African Rhino hunting, any shotgun will not work. You need a real rifle made for killing big game.

An English big game rifle, Or a .50 BMG would work on anything that walks or crawls on the earth's surface.

Basicly when you shoot a shotgun it makes something called a Buckblast, which is like a big impact and causes lots of damage when it hits something!
Also, some shot guns shoot something called a "12 gauge", which isnt as good as a buckblast but is still pretty powerful!

Pretty much what you need is an "eleant gun", which shoots something called a "round", sometimes refered to as a ball.
It's not as powerful as a buckblast, or even a 12 gauge, but it's still pretty good and shoots better! It even shoots farther and better, but its not as strong when it hits!
