Yeppers. Shorter is always fine. Longer is where you start to get dangerous.

A 2 3/4" 12ga will fire perfectly well in a 3" or 3 1/2" chamber for example.

You can fire the shorter shells in firearms designed for longer. Examples; 38 spec in 357 mag, 44 spec in 44 mag, 22 short or long in a 22 long rifle, 2, 2.5, 3 inch in a 3.5 inch chamber 12 gauge, yadda. Usuall there is a lip or ring to make it not possible to chamber a longer shell in a shorter chamber; but the world is not idiot proof, so it is a good idea to double check with the old mark vii eyeball.

yes, if it is chambered for .410 3" it can fire 2.5 or 3" shells. Just as a 12 gauge chambered for 3" can fire 2 3/4" shells.

Should be able to, but check with a gunsmith to be sure. Could get jammed depending on the model. It would be more dangerous to use a shell that's too big.
