It depends on the size of the hole you want to make LOL
Both .22 and.177 are imperial measurements. A .22 calibre means that the diameter of the barrel is .22 of 1 inch and a .177 is .177 of an inch. As .22 is larger than .177, a .22 makes a larger hole. A .177 should be fine for smal rodents but for larger animals (rabbits) a .22 is more effective as a .177 sometimes injures the animal but not enough to stop it getting away. A .22 is also OK for shooting rats and pidgeons if you don't mind the mess LOL Go for a .22, Happy Hunting! LOL

For serious target shooting .177, although I prefer a 22 for live targets a 177 will take out rats and pigeons with no problem. Anything bigger like rabbits I would definitely go with 22.

.177, you can get higher velocity, and they're more accurate. The .22 for an air rifle is more sluggish, and less accurate, although it will make a larger hole if you do manage to hit something. I have a .177 that's really accurate, and shoots well over 1000 fps. It's been used for quail hunting, and worked quite well. yard as it's shot holes right through my fence a few times.
