Hunting - July 2007

I have been an avid outdoors man for a long time but I have never gone hunting. It seems like it is a skilled sport. How can I find someone to take a complete novice hunting?

Hi, I'm looking at getting myself a .45-70. I've narrowed it down to the Marlin model 1895 and 1895G. The 1895 has a 22" barrel and the 1895G has a 18.5" barrel. Well my question is more centered around what is a "Guide Gun". The 1895G is a Guide gun, which I notice the shorter barrel, but what is the reasoning behind a shorter barrel and the name "Guide Gun". What are the differences between the two when you take into account ballistics, recoil, noise level etc? If someone could break me down the differences and the use/meaning of guide gun that would be great.

And then lastly, what would you suggest? I don't really have a singly purpose for the gun. Honestly, it probably see more occasional weekend target shooting then hunting.

I personally like the look of the Guide gun better (shorter), but I for one know not to buy a firearms just on looks.

All help appreciated, thanks!!!!!!

I have two Winchester lever action rifles. One is a .30 WCF, and says "patented 1894", and I am guessing this means a model 1894. I believe the serial number is 768498 (located on the underside, in front of the trigger guard). The other is a .32 WS, Model 94, with a serial number of 1608231 (number is in same location). My great uncle recently passed away, and I received these rifles via my cousin. Both rifles are in great shape with no rust and shiny stocks and forearms. Any info on these rifles?

Would buying one from Wal-Mart be ok? There isn't some special POS version only sold at Wal-Marts, is there?

P.S. What are your opinions of the gun?

My grandfather once upon a time had a working Mouser .22 Caliber single shot german training rifle. This was a training rifle used to train German Snipers during world war two and he also beleives it was used for training during world war one as well. Anyway, point being. His son, my uncle, ruined the rifle. All he has in usable condition is one of the barrels. He is interested in finding a place to purchase a whole new rifle, or at least the parts needed to refurbish what he has. Anyone able to point us in the right direction?

How can I install a new main spring on my rife?????

I recently purchased an Ox Mainspring and would like to install it into my BSA Lightning myself to boost the power in my rifle. I tried taking it to my gunsmith and they told me they had to limit the power to 12ft/lbs which is the legal limit in the UK if they install it.

Is there a way I can install it myself?

OR

Could I get someone else to install it without restricting it such as saying , "I wouldn't use it in the UK" or anyway to get them to install it and not restrict it?

Any ideas would really be appreciated,
Jack

I dont know a lot about shotguns. I have a Benelli Nova pump. Can I use a steel shot in this gun? It says on the box of shells to make sure the gun is designed for steel shot. How do I know if it is or not, also what is a better name to use. I bought Winchester Xpert HI-VELOCITY 3" steel shot. All help welcome.Thanks.

A character in a story I am writing is claiming he uses his Winchester for hunting (trying to take the blame for his wife), but another character is claiming he can tell the gun has never been shot and, in fact, is new. Is that possible or do I need to come up with another scenario?
