I want a revolver to use as a side arm for hunting, fishing and hiking.I was looking at them at a gun shop. And I really liked it.It would be perfect fo what I want.I currently own a 460 S&W with 8 inch barrel.I looked at the Emergency survival S&W's they are way too big.And they ony hold five shots.

Whether it is a good choice depends on your ability to shoot it accurately and the purpose for which you intend to use it. You say it will be a side arm for outdoor activity. This is a very heavy gun to carry around all day. You do not say where you live so answer this question, do you think you will be in a situation where you will need something in this caliber or the .44 as you asked in your other question? Regarding the shooting accuracy, the weapon will be accurate but will you be? You own a 460? How accurate are you with it? If you cannot hit Xs at 21 feet 5 out of 5 then you either need to practice more or get a different pistol. I think the first consideration should be the purpose, then decide on the caliber to achieve that. Ruger is a fine make, my wife owns the Vaquero in .357/.38 and really likes it, especially the magnums.

I have been looking at the same ones myself and was having this same debate. I've only got 2 more pistols I want to add to my collection any time soon, one is a real nice 1911 and one is a big magnum. I intend to do some larger game hunting with a pistol so I had narrowed it down to those and have had a chance to shoot a couple now. I think my favorite is the S&W 460. You have the option of shooting the .45LC so it's still moderately cheap and easy to shoot and good for small to medium game without crushing your hand and breaking the bank every time you take it out. It will also shoot the 454 if you want to tame it down a little bit more than the 460. Yet you still have the ability to load it with 460's if you're in an area you may have to worry about the critters that don't get that we're supposed to be at the top of the food chain. In my opinion the 500 is just too big to be fun to shoot on any type of regular basis so you'd be spending a lot of money on a gun and ammo that will just ride in the holster. If that's all your intentions are then it wouldn't be a bad choice because it definitely says "stop now" to whatever you shoot with it. With any of them, weight is a bit of a concern, I want more of it. To me, light weight and big magnums does not go together. I know you're looking at a shorter barreled version of what I'm looking for but the S&W 460 is still my favorite. The Ruger would save you about $400-$600 though and there's nothing to complain about with the Ruger, they are great guns too.

A true outdoors man! Have you looked at Taurus? They make a quality revolver for a few bucks less than some of the other guys. It's only 5 rnds., but hey, that's what speed loaders are for. I've got a friend who has a Taurus in 454. His is a titanium alloy. Incredibly light and a very well-built, sturdy gun. (I haven't shot it, and can't imagine the kick, but wouldn't that be a nice carry change?). I carry a Taurus revolver from time to time. My primary carry is a 45 ACP Taurus, and I'm quite happy with the quality of both my guns. Rugers have a long tradition, but don't pay extra just for a name.

If you're in big bear country, it seems a reasonable choice. On the other hand, the six-shot capacity isn't a plus in comparison. If you need it, you'll only get off one or two shots, anyway, though the blast from that short barrel might blind the charging bear. And it's still more than 2 1/2 pounds of metal to carry around.

You are showing just how little you know by asking such a question. No one in their right mind would carry or attempt to carry such a large caliber revolver, let alone one with an 8" barrel for fishing or hiking (Unless you are around large Bears). You further make yourself look ridiculous by the statement "Emergency S & W's are way too big."and "They only have five shots." Why not a 458 H&H Magnum Rifle? Never know when you might run into an argry T-Rex nowadays...........Stick with your Pellet Rifles....

If you really do own a sw460 pistol then you should know you can shoot 454 casull in it. Why would you go buy another pistol when the one you have will do the job already? It might be a good idea to stop bragging about your pistol, and do a little research and training with it.

There is a reason for only five shots. That is the maximun number of times you can pull the trigger before going to the ER for an arm cast.

first of all it is ALASKAN...not skin dude....anyways...good gun for self defense for bears or anything else....if you carry it...I suggest that it is the gun you practice with...which in turn is kinda spendy...you prob. know this with your 460 already....I looked at them also...
