I have a 1873 winchester 44-40 rifle serial number 253803B .I think it was made in 1885 .Its in great condition and I shoot it often. Its all orginal exept one part on the shell ejector.I was curious if anyone has access to looking up when it was made and if so who the original owner was .I thank you in advance for any help with this.

I would be willing to guess you are out of luck on this. In the 1870's there were not even records kept of purchases of these guns., and warranties of firearms didn't exist then.... The best you could do would be to back trace the year and month of actual manufacture. For this you can contact Winchester Arms directly in writing..This can't be done on the Internet but can be done if you send them a short letter requesting the info as the current owner of this rifle.

The BLUE BOOK says your 73 was made in 1888. I would contact the Winchester collecters Association in Cody,WY. at one time it cost $30.00 to do a serial number check. They might have the record's for your old shooter. Good luck

Google Winchester and follow the path; but I feel your chances are slim to none; and slim just left town.
