I disagree with some of the posts here. Wally has the capacity to have manufacturers make their items cheaper. A prime example of that is the trigger guard. Take a look at the one on the Winchester sold at wally world and you will see that it is either plastic or a VERY cheap polymer that you will have to spend money to get replaced the first time it gets bumped (I know because I had to do it.).

The Model 70 sold at Wal-Mart is the cheapest model of the 70 that yo can get. It rates with the Remington ADL (now called the SPS) and the Weatherby Vanguard series. You should be ok.
I believe that Wal-Mart does have something going on with the big mass gun producers, because I have looked at the order book and do not see any distributor addresses or anyhting like that. I know Dick's Sporting Goods uses "Ohio Southern Gun"-or something like that for it's Dayton,OH location. Bass Pro probably does the same thing. Relax and get your Winchester. What I deplore about Wal-Mart is the fact that you are not allowed to open the actions to check for quality and this is why i refuse to buy a centerfire from them. I will take a chance with a $99 .22, but not with a $400 gun.

You will find the exact same guns at most discount stores. Yes, they are often dressed down versions, but the actions, barrels, etc. are still the same. You should shop around, however, as this is one arena where Wal-Mart's price is not always the best. The market for Winchester Model 70's is a tight one, but sometimes more specialized sporting goods stores will run sales that Wal-Mart does not. Keep your eye pealed for these specials at places like Academy, Bass Pro, etc. They will often knock off 10-50 bucks certain seasons of the year to get you in their stores so you'll buy other, larger margin stuff while you're there. It's called loss leaders. They can sell high ticket stuff at or below their cost, so that you'll buy other stuff they have a high margin on.

Wal-mart stores (at least in my area), have stopped selling firearms, citing monetary reasons, but a winchester model 70 is a winchester model 70, even if it is only the base model. The 70 is a good rifle, I have a Model 70 carbine chambered in .243 Win, that was purchased for me for my 12th bday, and it is an excellent rifle, even if it is a touch small for me now (physically).

Walmart sells the exact same rifles regular sporting goods stores and hunting shops sell. You could go to bass pro shop, or ***** sporting goods, or walmart, and find the same rifle at all 3 stores. Manufacturers don't make a special "walmart" model, they make the same rifles no matter who buys them. The Winchester Model 70 series rifles are the standard for a lot of shooters, some prefer the remington 700, or the ruger 77, or the mauser action, it's all in what you, the actual shooter and owner of the rifle, feel best with.If you like it, and it fits your style of shooting better than all the others, well your choice is obvious.

There isn't anything wrong with guns sold at discount outlets like Walmart. They're just typically not as fancy - checkering not as fine, lower grade wood, that sort of thing.
As for the rifle itself, some would argue that only pre 1964 Model 70s are worth having because of the Mauser type bolt. But finding 1 of those now would be difficult and prob. prohibitively expensive. If I were bolt rifle shopping right now though, I would prob. lean toward the Savage or Ruger models.

A Winchester is a Winchester regardless of where it is sold. Walmart may have and often does have special arrangements with manufacturers to produce special variations of their models to be sold only in their stores. These models are often very plain models designed so to have a very attractive price to maintain Walmart's business model but they are still Winchesters and have they same quality inherent in all of their models. Walmart offered Weatherby rifles at an unbelievable price but they were Vanguard models with rubber stocks and generally very plain and not even manufactured by Weatherby but by Howa, but they were still weatherby's. weatherby made a contract with Howa to manufacture their Vangaurd rifles at a price Weatherby would not be able to manufacture them for but the contract called for very strict quality control measures to uphold the Weatherby name. They are every bit the quality rifle that a non Walmart weatherby is they are just not as fancy, but the price savings makes up for that with loads to spare and I am sure it is the same with Winchester
