You guys herd about this? If you roll a bamboo stick , or beer bottle over your shin for an hour a day , you will build callicus on your shins , and kill the nerves in them. Have you herd this , I have seen some people in my gym who do this , dont know if it really works , know of anything else that works?

-just wondering because it really ****** hurts when you get your leg kick blocked with a knee.

Why do people look for taekwondo for self defence ?
It has nothing to offer that includes REAL self defence techniques or applications.
When you see them do there "defence techniques" they just fall over and make it soooooooo unrealistic i see alot punching and holding their fist in the air and leaving it for 10 seconds while they think of what to do (what a joke) and Yes i do my research and look all over to "you tube" i have gone to alot of "schools" (Mc dojo's) and even my brother is a black belt in taekwondo and couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag.
When will people realise it is a SPORT not a self defence REAL criminals dont care about points and all the fancy footwork and unpractical high kicks will just get you killed !
Why do people in the "Sport" who love it and train it cant even spell it properly ?

A few documentaries had me thinking about Yong-In university, and the like. It's a pretty new idea in the Americas I'd say, but I think a lot of people are starting to jump on the concept.
What do you think of a martial arts degree program? There's some colleges that already have them. They are sort of hybrid with mat training, and a sort of sports medicine/martial philosophy/history mix. Not a lot of styles currently offered from what I've seen, but do you think they should start opening up, and with more variety? What are the pros and cons, in your opinion?

Did anyone watch it yesterday? I taped it, but I was able to catch the challenge match at the end. I though it was hillarious that the big guy got knocked out with one of those useless high kicks, then the other guy torqued his knee trying to be fancy. Did you notice that "The Professor" was hardly breathing hard after 2.5 rounds?

I took kung fu a couple years ago at a studio in Columbia MD. It was fun, educational, I enjoyed myself however they increased the cost and that along with the long commute ended that. Fast forward to now. I've started watching Human Weapon which opened my eyes to how many DIFFERENT styles there were and now I'm interested in relearning martial arts but not necessarily Kung Fu. I like Sambo and Savate but I'm open to any type of defensive martial arts. What's a good (affordable) school in the DC area?

Which is best for street self defence? Dont say Karate or boxing. All arts are not equal. If they were, karate black belts would be winning mma and never get beat up outside the dojo. In my opinion, its 50% person and 50% art.

I would like to learn some sort of self-defense but also a tactical form of fighting. No heavy flip the person/ punch their lights out etc. due to the fact that i have some back problems. I have dance training--> something light on your feet. I've also read about this form of training using a staff, anything of the sort would be great. Thanks for following this stretched out description, but I'm ready for a self-disciplined form of fighting.

PS: I've tried capoeira and liked it a lot but there aren't many places that offer this in my area.

Does 'perfection' refer to the optimum skill and strength levels can possibly be attained before old age or desease gets in the way?

Or does it refer to high proficiency that was never attained by anyone before?

Or was it the ability to defeat anyone in any situation flawlessly?
