Hi,
I have to choose between Silat, Hapkido, Taiji, Aikido, and Judo. My purpose of learning martial arts are:
1. Physical fitness
2. Mental control
3. Least important - fighting back a toughie, if cornered.
I weigh about 50 Kg and have little active life. Certainly I can't even think of Wushu and Kung Fu.
Which martial art should I choose among these?

after all, mcdojos, yeah they take business from the traditional schools, but mcdojos arent all bad are they? you can still get some good from them. a mcdojo still teaches the philosophy to an extent. and true, they may only be in it for the money, but the students still put in time, and they still have to progress. there are many bad things about them, but it's still better than nothing. and the people at mcdojos still learn.

Why do so many people assume that Jujutsu means BJJ/Gracie/only ground techniques?
I can't even tell what people mean when they say "Jiu Jitsu" on here.

Why do so many people assume Jujutsokas from a Japanese or American or some other system, or a Judoka, aren't proficient on the ground?
Don't they know that Brazilian Jujutsu was born from Judo, which was born from Japanese Jujutsu that had been used on the battlefield for hundreds of years?
I know MMA has become really popular, but people should at least make an attempt to educate themselves on the history and lineage of Jujutsu.

I do enjoy doing tai-chi and the martial application of it comme naturaly. I've meet some unfriendly guy in a street the other day and the tai-chi baisic just came to the surface and help me defend myself. I Know that to learn martial tai-chi is something who take time. But with time can it be a good martial art to defend yourself? I've hurt one of my knee and that's why i've stop aikido and karate, with tai-chi i didn't have any trouble, in fact my knees just go better :) but i'm searching for a real martial art with i can defend myself and the other and in wich i can spend time to learn combat technic.

I am new to martial arts. I am very interested and I learn very fast. I am athletic, in good physical shape, and I am 6`2 / 170 lbs. I have heard of an art called Aikido. Is that good for me? If not what is the best for me. **I am under 20 years old as well.

I will most likely be entering the military in a few years as well. What arts do they use?

Thanks for the help!

Alright, I know, this shouldn't be on the martial arts board, but its the only place I could actually get answers, and if i actually get a good answer this time, i promise never to post any questions like this again on here.
But I have taken a great enjoyment of the TV series Kung Fu with David Carradine, you know, when he was like twenty-seven or something, and I want to know what the given name "Kwai" means. I've looked up "Chang" and know what it means now, but I really want to know, if "Kwai" is a real Chinese name or something unique, and what it means if it's real. Any help is appreciated. Thanks much.

I'm taking a few weeks off of karate (doc's orders), because I seem to have injured some muscles in my lower back. The doctor says I'll be doing therapy for it, and he was saying things like "therapeutic exercise" and "flexibility program". What does that entail? Will I have just one person working with me, or will I be in a class? What sort of things will I have to do? Anybody out there ever had to do physical therapy?

He dodges, he silly slaps a bad guy until he's down or unconscious.

How much silly slapping is necessary when defending oneself against a mercenary-type foe?

Also, would this silly slapping be useful when swatting mosquitos or kneading bread?

To start off with, this won't be a club.. but combined with the other sword arts that the school is teaching, such as Renaissance Rapier and Samurai Bushido Katana, it would be a real school. Jedi lightsaber combines all the great sword arts into one style, and above that, it's all edge. No worries about blocking with the back edge, just go!

I previously asked this under the wrong username.

Is there a purse for each fight that is a different amount of money, or do they make a set amount each month like many people do?
