American kickboxing for the past 4 years and I can consider myself a pretty good kickboxer, but I was wondering, is Muay Thai much harder to pick up than American kickboxing? Will I be able to do it ?

Some of the kicking aspects emphasize things differently and therefore might be a little confusing to start with but they are by no means difficult to learn, develop and master. The round house kick is a good example. You tend not to bend the knee and chamber the kick so much and instead rely on throwing it more straight legged and stepping laterally slightly, relying on the thigh and hip to power it. For lower kicks its great but for higher kicks its harder to retain your balance and to reach the head sometimes. You also have the knees and elbows and all that to learn about and it will give you a new set of skills to use and rely on in close-in fighting that you did not have before. It will probably also help teach you not to clinch or rely on clinching only to nullify your opponents attack and smother his punches and kicks since you can not do that as effectively when knees and elbows are used or allowed. Most fighters can learn and pick up on the various aspects like those above if they are a halfway smart or decent fighter without too much trouble.

True Muay Thai training is far more rigid and grueling than kickboxing. It's not really harder, but a different conceptual style of fighting. It's pretty easy to get the point of the style fast if you've had any previous training,. To fight in this style make sure you have very conditioned bones and callouses - because you'll be whacking on extremities that you really don't hit much in Kick boxing.

I started from Jeet Kune Do and on an extended stay in Bangkok trained Muay Thai for one year. The first week I was drained as if I had never worked out before in my life. All this considering I was in great shape when I started Muay Thai.

Can't say enough about the benefit you will get from the training and style. Muay Thai is an Uber martial art.

Actually, I would think it would be easier for you to learn with your background.
