Alright, I know, this shouldn't be on the martial arts board, but its the only place I could actually get answers, and if i actually get a good answer this time, i promise never to post any questions like this again on here.
But I have taken a great enjoyment of the TV series Kung Fu with David Carradine, you know, when he was like twenty-seven or something, and I want to know what the given name "Kwai" means. I've looked up "Chang" and know what it means now, but I really want to know, if "Kwai" is a real Chinese name or something unique, and what it means if it's real. Any help is appreciated. Thanks much.

Yes, I have pondered that, but I think Kwai is a real word, just not often used. I've used it on search engines, and I think it could possibly mean fast or speedy, bu then, it would translate into fast flourishing if it's to be a male name, but i also need a for-sure confirmation of this, because the character doesn't seem ecceptionally fast or flourishing or smooth, maybe free....but fast doesn't seem to make sense.

If it's true, I'm not sure the directors and writers would choose Gwai as a name either. He's nothing of a devil. It's not his character.

The online chinese to english dictionary says there isn't any translation for the word KWAI.But these dictionarys do not allow for nick names regional dialects or even street slang.
It was probably some script writers idea of chinese .
CHANG on the other hand lists 30 possibilitys.
Also chinese words can be pronounced other than the spelling would suggest so something that sounds like KWAI could have an entirely different spelling.

It's a variation of Gwai, which means devil.
