Any art that has "Sanchin" as it's foundation, like Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu; Fujian arts like 5 Ancestor fist and White Crane fist, develop "Iron Body". These are internal arts that lessen the effects of trauma to the body.

So the stomach is covered.

When you learn the Fukyugata, which is a beginner form, there is a sequence of three strikes to the abdomen while stepping forward.

The rhythm of this sequence is usually performed as three separate strikes.

The actual sequence is punch... punch-punch.

The rhythm for this technique was developed to break down the strength of a hard abdomen.

So, we got suh'm for ya!

This is why the study of kata is so important. If you don't understand your kata, you won't reap the deep rooted benefits of your art.

YES and Yes and it was sore !! Giving a demonstration to new students (when i was young and stupid - not so young now but some say just as stupid). I was striding up and down looking good in clean white pyjamas with matching black belt with frilly silver bits (another story). Had asked other instructor to do the honors and punch gut area on my signal.
This is where timing is crucial - i turned to get ready - whack!! - no warning straight to the middle. Took it full force and survived (just!) - years of training paid off. Don't try this at home! I had a cracking red middle and beautiful blue/purple bruise the size of silver dollar. Would I do it again - no. Learned better ways to show off talent.
