He dodges, he silly slaps a bad guy until he's down or unconscious.

How much silly slapping is necessary when defending oneself against a mercenary-type foe?

Also, would this silly slapping be useful when swatting mosquitos or kneading bread?

those silly slaps makes him look like reeeeal masculine trying to fend off whomever (lol)...but i do have to admit i'd hate to be on the opposite end of those crazy lookin' slaps.

i think it would take about 500 silly slaps to hurt a mercenary-type foe.

lol, yes, those silly slaps WOULD be useful for swatting flies, mosquitos and kneading bread.

You have seen to much "reel" SEAGAL and no "real" SEAGAL
The slap either with the palm or back of the hand is a much overlooked skill in martial arts but has been used effectively by marines sumo wrestlers and other grappling and striking arts thru the ages even the GRACIES use it .
It can break noses jaws shatter ear drums disrupt the nerves in the side of the neck cause temporary blindness and then of course there are slaps to the groin .It is best used to set up locks and throws and in any case never be counted on as a finishing blow but a method of gaining quick acces to a finishing technique.

I don't know about you, but getting slapped hard on the ear by the huge meaty hand of a 6 foot plus tall 200+ pounds overweight guy will probably knock me down silly, not to mention probably damage my eardrums, no matter how old he is or whether his career is a wash out : P

Seagal uses a type of martial art that seems to me like a somewhat slowed down and less violent type of Aikido. He does throws and slaps after his attacker has commited his/her weight into an attack. After the attack he counters with a jab or chop or slap, like that of using a weapon. It is not as violent, no deathblows, but all in all I personally would be hurt if a fat old man grabbed my wrist, spun me around, striked with a swift backhand ,then toss me into a wall. In his movies it shows him meditating and focusing, it shows alot of the calm and focus that Aikido was orginated on. His uses throws and joint-locks but not the deadly blows or kill strikes as the Japanese military uses.

Heres alittle more, read this and see if it matches Steven Seagals fighting style. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aikido

Wang Xiang Zhai, the founder of Yiquan, slapped his best friend in the abdomen while sparring during training. His friend died from the strike. Master Wang mourned his best friend for three years. He did no martial arts during his mourning.

White Crane Fist, Five Ancestor Fist and most other Hakka Martial Arts use the "slapping" techniques.

Fear the "slap".

He has dojo's in Japan, California and he is still a studying martial artist, he can do all that you see on his movies and he's got the belly of a buddah. I would not want to intercept any of his funny looking slaps, trust me...
