My partner and I have decided that we want to take Tae Kwon Do. Back in the 80's, I was in the Army and trained in Judo/JJ. Currently, I have multiple sclerosis and also wear a de-rotational knee brace (CTi) that keeps my knee nice and stable during cutting activities. I am ambulatory with MS.

1) Will I be able to wear my knee brace in practice (is this prohibited)?

2) Can people with MS take martial arts and progress through the belts? Are there modified classes that allow us to progress?

I want to take TKD to increase my balance and strength. I need to get through a surgery (thyroid) first but believe that by Spring I should be in gear. I am working on some flexibility now and have a couple of books on the topic.

I'm really excited and motivated (and it gives me something to shoot for after this surgery). Just wanted to hear some expertise. :)

Thanks

Also any input on equipment I purchased - Freestanding Heavybag... any experience with using the freestanding versus the hanging? What's your opinion?

I've seen this tattoo on a lot of fighters(MMA, Muay Thai kickboxers), they usually have it on their arm. Anyone have an idea of the significance? I've seen it on at least three fighters, including Rob McCullough.

YAY MY BLACK BELT TEST WAS YESTERDAY AND I PASSED WOOHOOO I AM NOW A FIRST DAN IN TKD
now, to my question. I just wanted to know about you people's black belt tests, how they went, what you did, how you felt afterwards, and anything else you may want to say about it (except for TKD haters talking about why TKD sucks this is about black belt tests NOT which art is better than another).
thanks!

As I was in University and worked part time I had no time for sports, thus, I'm a little overweight, and tend to loose all this fat now that I'm graduated. There are all kinds of martial arts in my area which I can choose from: BJJ, TKD, traditional Jiujitsu, Karate, Judo, Sambo, Kung fu, Muay thai, and boxing. However, I am mostly interested in Tae kwon do, Judo and traditional jiu jitsu. As a kid I took TKD, it was fun and I learned a lot, its great for cardio, and I think its good for emergencies as I was really good at it. Anyway, my question is, which one of my top 3 would be better? In terms of cardio, fun, defence. ( I'm interested in defence quite a bit)
Any martial artists out there that can advice me?

Thanks!

I read about this style created by Antonio Pereira in the South Bronx. It combines Judo, Aikido, and Jujitsu. With that said, does anybody know the effectiveness of this system?

Why is kenpo under rated? I have been looking through multiple questions on which martial art is the best for self-defense. Obviously there is no one ultimate martial art but kenpo should be in there. Nelieve it or not MMA is not a style and the things they do are in a ring with tons of rules. There arent any rules in a street fight. Please give me an answer on why people think that tae kwon do and "MMA" are the best practical martial arts.
