My 9 year old son wants to do a kata demonstration for a talent show at our school. He thought it would be awesome to put fukyu kata ni to music. Does anyone have any suggestions for a powerful music selection?

There is an old quote from Bruce Lee, "Martial arts should be performed with emotional content." This quote is very true and also holds true for all you do, not just martial arts. If you cannot feel it in your heart and soul, you're just going through the motions. What you feel can illicit response and grab attention from others. Regardless of how well you can perform, do you want them to be bored and watch you "go through the motions" - because you dont feel it either? Or, would you like to illicit a really severe emotional response that will assure you of a few extra bonus points? Somehow, I think you would prefer the second option. I cannot, nor can anyone else, tell you which music to choose; because, no one here knows you or knows what reaches you. There are three things you need to keep in mind, with regards to your music selection: 1) What music reaches YOU and illicits emotional response. In other words: what song, when you hear it, really makes you feel something, in your heart and soul? 2) Make sure the song correographs well with your performance. If you're performing a slow kata you may not want to choose acid rock. Something more subtle may work here. Conversely, if it is a hardcore kata with lots of explosive moves, music with a little more intensity should be your choice. 3) Keep in mind your audience - In this case, the judges. No matter how great you think a music piece may be, nothing will turn off your audience faster than musical accompiment they despise. Hardcore rap for rednecks, thrash metal for senior citizens, choices like this just do not work! Who will be watching you? Who will be judging you? As someone who, in the past, has judged MANY such events. I will say that opinions of the judges have been effected by the musical choices of the participants. Choice wisely, based on what makes you feel, what the judges will feel and goes well with your kata.
