The whole thing started on The Ultimate Fighter 4. Matt Serra was a fighter on that season, and Matt Hughes came in as a guest coach. Both teams went out to dinner, and Hughes decided to take a shot at regular coach Georges St. Pierre. Hughes was yakking it up across the restaurant to GSP, and asked him to teach him (Hughes) some fight techniques. Georges simply said back "Yes if you teach me something as well" and looked like he was done with it. Then Hughes said "What's that? The defense to the armbar?" referencing their first fight. Georges is obviously not one to really fight back, and just looked away. Din Thomas, who was sitting with Georges, tried to get him to fight back. In the van on the way home, Matt Serra spoke his mind about Hughes, calling him a penis etc. for verbally attacking GSP in the restaurant.

After Serra beat GSP, they decided to make them coaches on TUF6, and they just kept going at each other. Their personalities are HUGELY different. Anyway, they never fought. Serra herniated a disc in his back and won't be able to fight Hughes this month. GSP is taking his place, and Serra will fight the winner.

I also think it has something to do with Hughes beating Royce Gracie.
