The martial arts is as strong as the person. So many people believe that Brazilian Jujitsu is the best martial arts ever... when it's really their mouths. See, when people brag and brag constantly over which person will defeat this guy... or if this martial arts could overcome that martial arts... it becomes a war of stupidity. As if we are back in the cavemen time again.

Let me tell you something: it doesn't matter if the individual takes martial arts or not. It all depends how the person applies him or herself to defend or attack.

Cheers.

The functional problem with karate is its linearity: its tendency to think in straight lines, at chest height.

Karate has a very hard time dealing with someone willing to change levels, like wrestlers or judoka, who will duck down very low and assault legs. As hard as you work on kicking people, they work at grabbing legs before they can move.

In my personal experience, I've beat every karate practicioner I've ever faced simply by circling. Kata most often teaches you to travel in a straight line. By cirlcing around my opponent and throwing hooks and leg kicks, I've bewildered them all and taken away their ability to use the techniques they train in.

(And, needless to say, karate's useless in ground combat.)

As a sport, karate's great. And being in good shape and practicing fast kicks and punches will certainly help you if a butt ever requires some kicking. But if you face someone that trains in a full-contact combat sport like muay thai, brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling or boxing, you're going to have a really rough night.

Yes.
Can someone who does TKD kick butts? Yes
Could someone who does boxing kick butts? yes.
Could someone who does no specific fighting style at all kick butts? Yes.
Everyone is capable of kicking butts. Is the style important? No. Is even taking classes important? It helps but it's not the key.

Oh and once again to all those who say karate or any martial art is not about "kicking butt" then you need to look at the definition of the word "martial". Despite what Mr Miyagi tells you, martial arts are about fighting and the goal of a fight is to beat up on your opponent.

Well, if the person is good in karate like a 10 degree black belt , expert, master whatever. Remember when learning karate it's all about defense. Good luck and good bye!

Not necessarily. Just because someone is taking classes in a martial art doesn't mean they're good at it.

For example, there are two teenage kids in my Tae Kwon Do class who do nothing but joke and flirt the whole time. Neither of them are even relatively good because they don't pay attention. Their form is absolutely horrible, they have no power behind their techniques whatsoever, and they have the coordination of a drunken elephant. But I'm sure if someone were to pick on them or mess with them, the first thing that will come out of their mouths is "I'm in Tae Kwon Do!" as a way to try and intimidate their opponents.

Like I said, just because someone says they're in a martial art doesn't mean they're good at it.

Able? sure, depends on the person. but there are more people educated in kicking other people's butts than karate practitioners are in being effective in saving their own butts. (strictly numbers)

Knowing how to kick butt is only a small portion of what a person needs to know in order to actually be able to do so. More important is the appropriate mindset.
If you meet up with someone who is out to take your head off, as in "One of us is going to be dead, and it ain't me!" all the roundhouses to the bag in the world will amount to nothing. You have to want to live more than the other guy wants you dead. Period.
If you are willing to do whatever it takes to be the one to walk away from the confrontation, your training will give you the physical means necessary. YOU are the only one able to give yourself the proper mindset.

Karate is the art of self-protection. It is not about kicking anyone's butt.
