I LOVE samurai's and I love how they actually trained hard to become strong and lived and died by the sword. How can I train to become skillfully at the sword at 16? I here most people start young like at 8 years old.. so am I starting too late? what can I do to train myself at home other than joining a dojo/

If you buy a gun I'm sure you could waste anyone who knows the ways of the sword, and it would save you a lot of time

It's never too late.

The sooner in life you start, the easier practicing habits will be to establish, and the more flexible you'll be.

However, consider that different stances were created for land, muddy rice-paddies, etc. The way of the sword is obsolete. You need to train for what you may actually encounter and with what you can actually use. You can't just walk down the street with a deadly weapon - you WILL get arrested; it's in the NYS Penal Code.

I am a 5th Kyu in Goshin Budo Ju Jutsu. They have some weapons training and it's all useful today. A hanbo could be a baseball bat, and a bo could be a rake handle or a shovel.

OTHER than join a dojo? You could get some tapes, but you should really have someone there to correct you and an appropriate venue in which to practice.

Trying to learn by yourself will guarantee that you will be sore and have sloppy technique. Learn from a dojo and practice at home.

As for the moves not having any applicability in the modern world, it depends on how you train. If you train correctly you will see moves (punches, blocks, throws) that can be done empty handed with great effect against an unarmed opponent.

You can't. You actually do have to be trained in a dojo. It's not something you learn on your own.

Just ask my parents. My mother is a first-kyu brown belt in Isshinryu, dad's a first-dan in Ninjutsu. They will tell you it is NOT easy, and not something to take lightly.

it's never too late to pick your self up a Star Wars Light Saver Sword at Walgreens to play with your friends at school.
