Hi, I'm from Australia and I've taken a keen interest in American sports this past year. I'm following teams from New York, and in hockey I've decided to go for the Rangers. So can someone tell me in a nutshell, who the New York Rangers are? Are they any good right now? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Who is the star player?

Thanks!

Between what Chris Simon did to Ruutu and what Maxime Afinogenov did to Scottie Upshall? Look pretty goddamn similiar to me. If that had been Steve Downie, you can be sure he would have recieved his 20 game suspension by now.

You have all seen the Simon incident. Afinogenov slew footed Scottie Upshaw and then attempted to step on him.

Where is his suspension? Double standard? WTF?

Hey I hate to panhandle, but it is the season of giving.

If you have any old youth hockey gear collecting dust in the garage/basement, you could donate it hear and it will go to helping the game grow in new places. (Or you could just buy something from the merch section. lol)
http://irishamericanhockeyassociation.org/

Notice the .org. Nobody is trying to make any money, so save me the lecture.

Anyway, Happy Holidays everyone and I don't really care where you donate it, but if you have some old gear laying around, donate it and you might be giving a kid a chance he wouldn't have had otherwise to enjoy the game we love so much. (steps off soapbox)

Oh yeah, a question, ummmm......who should I pick up for my fantasy team, David Hale or Greg Zanon?

List a few christmas wish list items that you think would benefit your team. I'll start my two fav teams:

Dear Santa:

Please bring the following for the Pens:
1. A healthy Fleury and Sabourin, and also make the goalies play consistently for the rest of the season.
2. Let the wingers score some goals once in a while. Just Sid and Geno is not enough.
3. Purge their team and their farm system of all the "daisies" still there from the Craig Patrick era.
4. Please make their defensmen throw a check once in a while.
5. Please get them to the playoffs and at least not embarass themselves this time.

Dear Santa:

Please bring the following to the Red Wings:
1. Pretty much keep the status quo.
3. Give the players a little more nastiness for this years playoff run. Gonna be tough to beat the sharks and ducks without it.

Thanks Santa!! I'll leave the bourbon a cigar out by the tree, like you asked!

I was picking on my father last night about all of the bowl games in football, and he picked on me about 16 NHL teams making it into the playoffs.

Do you think that fewer teams should be allowed into the playoffs?

On a side note: The year is ending, and I wanted to thank everyone for accepting me in the hockey section. I really enjoy that I can come on here and get some great information and opinions of the game that I love so much. You guys are great and I hope you have a great, safe (insert holiday here)!!!

there's just one thing i should address, some analyst's are saying this is one of the weakest squads sent to represent canada in awhile. But how can that be? the two 17 yr olds playing there, one of whom is being touted as the next gretzky, the other being touted as a mix between bure and yzerman, and two of the most touted d-men to come from canada probably since chris pronger or scott niedermayer. And there names are Drew Doughty and Alex Pietrangelo. and what about the goalies Steve Mason and Jonathan Bernier. Bernier in my opinion, is better than Carey Price, or Justin Pogge.Anyways who do you think are the top 4 nations that could really challenge Canada, maybe even put them out?

I just read this that S.I. in an article said that ST. Paul, MN the home of the Wild at Xcel Energy Center is declared the new "Hockeytown" since poor attendence has taken a dip at the Joe. even though they've been doing great. That's a sad, sad day in Detroit when we are no longer considered "hockeytown" man I'm bumbed out now but, they won against them 4-1! how do you feel about this news of no more "hockeytown" label in our Motor City!
Anyway, Merry Christmas/Happy New Year... may you have safe travels... I'm going to go and sulk... boo hoo.... whaaah...

I was reading the Philly Inquirer at halftime of the Eagles (the team that has as many 2 game winning streaks as the Flyers do since November) and a factoid in the "On This Date" zipped me back in time. (There's a guestion at the end here).

On this date in NHL history, Bryan Trottier scored 5 goals and 3 assists in a game vs. the Rangers. I had no love for the Isles back then, but Trots was one of my favorite opposing players. I was just out of high school and about a year away from living and working around the midwest. The Flyers were in a downturn since their halcyon days as NHL champs but I still thought they could interrupt the Habs run of consecutive titles. Don't mean to wax nostalgic on ya' but once in a while, a news item can take me back to a memory that feels like it happened yesterday. Now to the question.

Best Answer goes to the first answerer that can tell us what record Trottier set that night.

Ahhh, Sunday afternoon.......no work to do.......plenty of time to just chill out and enjoy the day........think I'll watch the Bruins at Penguins to day on Center Ice.....maybe BGL and Chara will actually have a good scrap this time.....lemme see the Center Ice Schedule.

What?!?!?! Blacked out?!?!?!

AGAIN, the frucking game is being broadcast on NHL network, and is blacked out in my area on my Center Ice package, even though I live thousands of miles from Pittsburgh and/or Boston and my cable carrier does not have NHL network.

Please somebody give me an explanation that justifies why I shouldn't murder all the people involved in the creation of this NHL Network.

I know the NHL's popularity is way down right now, and I have not been as into hockey as I used to be, but I am starting to think it is the best sport to see live. I went to Bruins vs. Blues on Saturday and it was such a great time. I don't know of any other sport where you can sit right up close near the action while drinking whiskey. You get to see guys get slammed into boards, you get to see fights, ridiculous saves, crazy goals. Plus at one point Chara nailed a guy into the boards right in front of us and the guy in the front rows beer splashed all over him, which I found hilarious. It was ugly christmas sweater night so many of the fans in attendance were wearing terrible sweaters. They even gave a prize to the guy with the ugliest one. How does it get better than that? And after first period you get to see the tiny kids play, which is hilarious, especially when you are drunk.

Does anyone else think NHL hockey is mostly being overlooked right now?

So don't get me wrong. Karri Ramo is doing great, and last night's loss was not his fault....but I'm just a little anxious cause the Lightning are 14th in the East. We need all the wins we can get and should have won last night but I'm still nervous with a rookie in goal even though I don't trust Denis or Holmqvist anymore either.

So why isn't anything being done about Tampa's goalie situation?? It's not like we aren't scoring (we have Lecavalier and St. Louis with banner years again). If Torts likes Holmqvist, fine but why not drop Denis 2.5 Mil and make up for it some how? I know I should give Ramo more time and he is great an all, plus the Lightning always come back in the 2nd half of the season....but disregarding that, what can we do about this goalie situations???
