I know the NHL's popularity is way down right now, and I have not been as into hockey as I used to be, but I am starting to think it is the best sport to see live. I went to Bruins vs. Blues on Saturday and it was such a great time. I don't know of any other sport where you can sit right up close near the action while drinking whiskey. You get to see guys get slammed into boards, you get to see fights, ridiculous saves, crazy goals. Plus at one point Chara nailed a guy into the boards right in front of us and the guy in the front rows beer splashed all over him, which I found hilarious. It was ugly christmas sweater night so many of the fans in attendance were wearing terrible sweaters. They even gave a prize to the guy with the ugliest one. How does it get better than that? And after first period you get to see the tiny kids play, which is hilarious, especially when you are drunk.

Does anyone else think NHL hockey is mostly being overlooked right now?

Its a sport where television does it no justice.. It took the actual thing of my being there to convince me 3 years ago.. This game feeds off of the crowd energy which seldom gets seen on TV.. It is the absolute BEST entertainment for the dollar you pay hands down..
True, popularity is a bit off right now; but I have found everyone I have taken to a game wants to go back.. Maybe this is a way to take back the popularity that has been abandoned ; (to no fault of the fans, either).. And just because ESPN shows something, doesnt mean its "the bomb" or even a sport for that matter, (example-- poker--WTF?)
So, youre gonna get all "hell ya it is" responses here.. But you will never convince everyone that this is the best sport no matter how hard you try.. Just keep taking newbies to games, making it to all games possible yourself and find some friends who share your enthusiasm so you have people who understand your obsession..
And you have probably found that place right here.. And its not too bad of a little crew we have afterall.

Absolutely, hockey is being overlooked, especially since those idiots at ESPN have decided there really isn't anything in sports besides football, the Yankees, and Kobe Bryant. It needs to be brought to more people, Verses does a good job but too few people can watch it.

Hockey is without question the most exciting game there is for several reasons. For the most part all the players have class. I mean, I saw Aaron Downey fight someone in a game the other night and then once the refs ended it, they patted each other on the back- it was hilarious. NFL players would never fight and make up on the spot! Hockey is always fast paced and line changes happen in the middle of a play, no constant whistles to bring on new players. I also think it is really fun to watch on TV. Cameras bring you right into the action- it's awesome:)

Yes they even have the best promotions. A couple weeks ago in Detroit they had orange hat night to honor the orange hat man that has been a long time season ticket holder and always comes to games wearing...you guessed it, an orange hat!

Oh and I absolutely love watching the little kids during intermission. They absolutely crack me up:) Their helmets seem to take up half their body. My little cousin actually got to skate at the Tampa game the other night- too cute!!!!

HELL YES!!! I am in love with Hockey!! I have loved it for the longest time, but ever since the strike, it has gone downhill (which is heartbreaking). But I totally agree with you: there is no other sport where u can sit right against the glass and watch guys get checked into the boards or get into fight-fights that are sometimes so big, they involve the whole team. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT. I wish I could live in a hockey arena and just watch games every day for the rest of my life!!

***and the little kids in between periods are ADORABLE***

Naw, the only guys thinking hockey is being overlooked are the ones who overlook it. You know, the guys that are stuck in one of the other sports sections and only come on here to cause trouble. We know what we have and don't care if it's kept secret.

Yes. But some idiots think football is. What takes more? an 82 game season or a 16 game one?

There's no question that Hockey is the best sport. Here in Canada that is never in doubt. Go Canucks!
