What is wrong with a tie anyway?
They don't use Field goals in football.
They don't use a home run derby in baseball.
They don't use free throws in basketball.
They use penalty shots in Soccer but they allow many more ties and a 3 point win.

Listening to alot of old farts who played in the NHL pertaining to cheap shots nowadays, most of them seem to think part of it was fear. You knew that if you dished out a hit from behind or a vicious slash, there would be a big price to pay, you were going to get pummeled by someone and not down the road but right afterward. They would self police sort of speak. Beat the bloody snot bubbles out of the offender, in turn, guys would think twice before doing something stupid.
Seems to me the NHL has gone soft, instead of handing out these ridiculous inconsistent suspensions, let the players handle it themselves. I mean, you can still give them their 5-10 game suspensions but let them pay the price old school. Get rid of the instigator. I believe that if the instigator were to go, the cheap shots would go down.

Do you agree that no instigator penalties would equal less cheap shots?

With Russia not being part of it in the first place and now Sweden has decided to opt out (on a clause) as of Jan.1st.
Also, every other participating nation (the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland) wants to re-negotiate their blanket transfer agreement with the league.

The groups are supposed to meet Jan.16th to try to resolve flaws in the agreement.
Should the NHL and it's fans be concerned about this?

Okay, so which are you watching? One, both, or neither? I guess for my American friends, the answer is none because they don't broadcast them, but what about those of you in Canada?

I'm enjoying both, even if they're completely different. I love the on-ice cameramen for Spengler shootouts, and it's been fun to watch the Canadian powerplay try to adjust to the big ice surface in the juniors.

Your thoughts?

I have these two tickets for Jan 10, Senators vs Buffalo Sabres, section 308, the face value is $120 for the two of them and I'd like to sell them for $60, which is 50% off. However, I've received calls for people asking me if I'm selling them for $40 or $30 for the two. Do you think $60 is a reasonable price for them. I'm still losing half of the price.

He got 4 games for his baseball swing to the back of Koivu's knee.
What originally was thought to be a minor bone crack has turned into Koivu missing a month and a half of what looked to be a promising season for him
.
In a season of the largest suspensions handed out in league history, do you feel that 4 games was appropriate in this situation and why was the league was so light in comparison to some of the other suspensions this season?
Was it Koivu's attempted elbow that lightened to suspension? What do you think?

take a look at these ideas, particularly no. 8 and 4. Keep in mind that Brett Hull knows what he's talking about, afterall he did score 70 back to back goal seasons, including 86 goals in one season.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1728310 (bigger nets?im not for it, but im all for offense, just take alook at the lightning and flames 9-6 or the 9-5 score between colorado and st. louis, those were pretty exciting, back and fourth scoring games.( and they haven't even considered reducing the size of the goalie eqipment)

For the life of me, I cant remember who it was, but I was watching a game recently and one of the announcers was talking about this happening. He was a healthy scratch, and both goalies did get hurt. He ended up playing , with permission from the NHL! Does anyone remember who it was?

I am just starting a debate, not taking sides.
But I had this conversation last night and I would like your input.

With all the advancements in on and off ice training, the increase in size of athletes in general, nutrition, equipment, sophisticated systems play, rule changes, etc. It can easily be argued that today's athletes have a distinct advantage over those of years past and therefore should be the best overall athletes in the history of the game.

Even with the NHL talent level diluted to the degree that it is now, do you believe that these advancements have increased the ability of players to be better than ever?

Or is the fact that records aren't being shattered right and left just magnify how diluted the talent really is considering these advantages?

While many of us hockey fans marvel at the career longevity of players such as Mark Messier, Gordie Howe, and John Bucyk, there are those players who were not as fortunate to excel for such a enduring period of time at the NHL level. These players had the worst luck of playing in the league for one season (or a handful of games in a given season)...then disappearing forevermore. Who were the best players of this special breed of NHLer?

I read in the newspaper today (the Toledo Blade) that the Hockey News named Nicklas Lidstrom the greatest European NHL player since 1967 (as well as the tenth best player since that year).

While I strongly believe Lidstrom is one of the ten greatest defensemen ever, as well as the greatest Swedish-born hockey player of all time (with apologies to Peter Forsberg, Pelle Lindbergh, and Mats Sundin), there is no way I would forgo the talents of Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Bure, Dominik Hasek, et al among the European elite. The question here is this: is Lidstrom really the greatest European-born NHL player since 1967?
