A scratch is a player who doesn't dress for the game and sits in the press box or watched the game from his hotel room.

A healthy scratch is a player who is healthy enough to play, but the coach chooses not to dress him for wehatever reason

It means the the player is not active for a game so he is "scratched" from the lineup

Healthy scratch means he's healthy buuut he's still on the bench.
