Sidney Crosby recently remarked that he wished he could have played during the Gretzky era. He would have liked to have shot against the goalies of the day, rather than those of today

Most players of today would have preferred to have faced goalies prior to the 1993-94 (dawn of the big pad era) season than now. The equipment was smaller then.

In 1989-90, Mike Vernon and his equipment filled up 33% of the net.

In 1997-98, MIke Vernon and his equipment filled up 48% of the net, and Vernon weighed 12lbs less in 1998 than he did in 1990.

There is a lot less for a shooter to shoot at today than ever before.

Crosby is just one of many in a long string of players to chime in lately about the differences in size of goal equipment then and now.

It isn't what they wore, it was their style of play........Today most goalies, Dominic Hasek a noted exception as he has a "fish out of water" style, have adopted the butterfly style of goaltending made famous by Patrick Roy. Just give a watch to a Maple Leaf game where they have actually let Andrew Raycroft in......he spends most of the game on his knees whether they are actually shooting at him, or not. Goalies of yesteryear mostly used the "stand up" style of play......rarely ever going down to make a save, but using toe kicks, poke checks, relying on their gloved hands and the occasional stack the pads move. This was early in the Greztky era however, and has given way to the butterfly styles of today. The pace of the game has changed since then, so the goalies must adapt, and learn by watching what works. i, for one would have loved to have seen Crosby try for a break away on Patrick Roy, or try to take the puck away from Ron Hextal behind the net............

With all the talent Crosby possesses, he should keep his trap shut much like Gretzky did. You can pine away ad waste time on dreams that will never come to fruition, or you can play the game and win at the level you are facing now. if you want to go back to a simpler time, build a time machine and shut it!

the bing wants an enforcer like gretzky had so he could score more. don't listen to everything he says, he's only 21 or so.

Overall, most goalies are better now than they were then, both physically and in understanding positioning and such. I think the bigger difference is not the goaltending, but the defensemen. They were bigger than the forwards but generally couldn't skate nearly as well as they do today.
