Still playing house league at 14?

Your chances of making it to the NHL are none!

The only way this is acceptable is
a) the nearest travelling/high school team is hundreds of miles away (plausible - especially for girls/women)
b) you don't play travel hockey because you can't afford it and nobody in your community has bothered to help you out (highly unlikely if your skills are as good as claimed).

In both Canada and the US there are financial programs to help 'underprivileged' players who are gifted at hockey/football to play these games and compete at a high level without placing an undue financial burden on the families. So players no longer have that excuse.

15 years ago a study was done, and the number of NBA players who hadn't picked up a basketball/played organized basketball by the age of 15 was 13%. The corresponding number in the NHL of players who by the age of 15 hadn't played travel hockey, was 0%.

You know there are other alternatives to the NHL. In the ECHL, you can make anywhere from 400-600 bucks a week and the AHL from 30k to 225k per annum. And then theres the European elite leagues. But if you're wanting to just play hockey to make a living, better get a plan "b" or even a "c". Play hockey because you love and have a real passion for the sport, the rest will take care of itself. Bottom line, get into a travel program by whatever means it takes whether it be a local scholarship or a bake sale.

It really depends on your skill-level. Also, you should consider going to hockey camps/tournaments where there are different scouts (ranging from junior to college scouts, maybe even NHL scouts if you are lucky) who can definitely tell you whether or not you are "pro-hockey material".

However, the road to becoming an NHLer or just a professional hockey player is tough and just because someone says that you have the skills to make it far does not necessarily mean that you will. I know that may sound harsh and mean, but it is true. If you are really serious about the sport, then try and make a travel team where you live. After that, you should consider going into junior hockey then possibly college hockey if you can make it that far.

Good luck!

Houseleague will not get you to the NHL, Unless you can drop the gloves and pound the crap out of everyone. Looks like your only hope.

When Michael Jordan was in 10th grade, he was told he didnt have the skills.. We all know what became of his efforts..
Less than 1% of all that pick up a stick will make it to the NHL.. But those who do have the skills and the mentality to let nothing discourage them..
As long as you have desire you have a chance. just ask yourself, how big does the fire burn inside for it?
Puck is in your zone kid-- Whatcha gonna do??

Lity-- Interesting.. One would think with the ammount of skill required to play each sport, there would be more similarities.
Not gonna argue your point at all.. Just saying the "grit" factor is one that can change according to the player.. Obviously, a little late for this level of play, but I'm not gonna discourage the kid.. But in the same sense, I'm glad you didnt "sugar coat" the situation for him as I did ..

At 14 years of age you should realize we can't answer that question without seeing what you can do. We have no idea who the people are that tell you that you have the skills. They might be idiots or they might be right.
