I am looking to purchase a single rifle that can handle many activities. I am an amatuer marksman for fun, with my cheap savage .270 which is a beater at best, I can pop eggs at 200 yards without any problem with cheap federal factory loads. I feel that with practice and with the right equipment and handloads I could get to the 800, 1000 yard club and want a rifle that can do that, but I can also hunt with without disintegrating the animal, (yet can take down any game in this continent), that isn't obnoxiously heavy, and can shoot from any position without uncomfortable recoil.
I am thinking the best choice considering all the options is a .300 win, maybe mostly Remington 700 action and frame, with a heavy free-floated barrel with the1/11.5 twist they put on their milspec guns, and maybe an adjustable stock with balanced weight, and probably wouldn't cost an obscene amount of money (<1.5K) Thoughts?
