You are going to have to check your State's laws. Some states do allow felons to hunt with black powder muzzle loaders, others do not.

Federal law does not ban black powder guns to felons.

Here, in Wyoming, a felon, relying on the word of a deputy and the Wal Mart clerk, bought a muzzle loader to hunt with. He was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Wyoming law states that a felon may not possess "any firearm" and the court ruled that included muzzle loaders. He was found guilty but the judge only gave him a two year supervised probation sentence.

Check the law where you live. Be sure it is not open to interpretation.

Check with your State Parole & Probation Department or State Police. Many states do not allow convicted Felons to own , posess or purchase ANY firearm under Federal Statutes.Federal law takes president over State laws. If a gun is designated a "Firearm" and is listed as such under individual state law, than No one convicted of a Felony class crime can posess or have a firearm of ANY type in his posession. There are a few exceptions for Felons hunting with Bows, but I have never heard of any that allowed a convicted Felon to be anywhere near a firearm. Especially if that convicted Felon is on any form of probation as a result of the original charges....

Where i live you can't own or posses archery, black powder or any other killing device that can even include a pellet rifle. have you ever looked at a 4473 ''paper work you do before a gun sale'' It's stricter now than it was before. Talk to your probation officer about primitive weapons if no violent crime was committed he might give you a break . with out his blessing if you get caught your screwed! good example of why one should stay out of trouble to start with. This is NOT word for word but one question on the 4473 says some thing to the affect of have you committed an offence that a judge COULD have sentenced you to 12 months or more. Most petty offences could probably get you that but most judges wont give you the max for say knocking over a mail box. Guess what ? you still COULD have been sentenced to 12months.Just an example i have no clue what offence can get you 12 months but i bet it's not much.

You could use a black powder "gun" if yuor state allows you to use one as a felon. The feds do not care for the reason stated by another poster. But these days even with the feds on yuor side you would want to make suire that you do not draw uneeded attention to yourself. Your question reminds me of someone who want to saw off the barrel and make a pistol out of a blackpowder shotgun. Legal, but extremely taboo.

None. Convicted felons cannot be in possession of any firearm in the US. The charge would have to be expunged for 2 years before you could legally buy a gun.

it is very dicey question a lot of variables (the judge, lawyers, LEO's, and such) not sure it is worth the risk
i know the BATFE does not consider a muzzle loader as a firearm, but the judge may see different that's the funny thing about laws they are open to interpretation (weather we agree with it or not)

convicted felons are prohibited from owning or even being around firearms.
Having said that, since a blackpowder rifle is not classified as a firearm.................

Felons CANNOT OWN GUNS, NOR HAVE GUNS IN THEIR POSSESSION. This is a federal law.
