My mother had finally opened up to me as to why she despised religion. She told me that from the time she could remember, she was dragged to church everyday. If she, or my uncles or aunts made a fuss about it, they would be beaten.
She was taken by her aunt, who was a seamstress. My mother confessed that the reason they went, was so that her aunt could see what the other women were wearing, and ridicule them. As well as possibly get in an idea or 2 for a new article of clothing. My mother had a hard time telling me about it.
Was this a common thing for some people in the 60's and 70's? Or anything similar even today?
This question was sparked by a previous one about cliques in churches.
