The stop believing in false Gods and start believing in the real unconditionally loving God.
Religion is a lie about God.

You take away their hope, and dreams, and they break down and becomes shells of human beings because life is not worth living without Jebus. And, after they finally come to grips with that, they become hedonists, thieves, all that jazz, because they are not being judged, so that means they are free to do whatever they want...right?
Eventually, they'll become stable, functional human beings...but that long period of sulking and/or antisocial indulgences are one of the reasons you should base your life on something that cannot yanked out from under your feet so easily.
