My mother had finally opened up to me as to why she despised religion. She told me that from the time she could remember, she was dragged to church everyday. If she, or my uncles or aunts made a fuss about it, they would be beaten.

She was taken by her aunt, who was a seamstress. My mother confessed that the reason they went, was so that her aunt could see what the other women were wearing, and ridicule them. As well as possibly get in an idea or 2 for a new article of clothing. My mother had a hard time telling me about it.

Was this a common thing for some people in the 60's and 70's? Or anything similar even today?

This question was sparked by a previous one about cliques in churches.

Well Pamela, it is fine that you go to church. I suppose you are agitated by my question. You do not have to give your irrelevant 2 cents. It was not that my mother, aunts and uncles didn't want to go to church. Wouldn't anyone want to go to church if it was made into a joyous occasion? Not, if you speak up that you may not want to go, that you will be beaten?

As for cliques, why would it be commonplace in a church of all places! Where everyone is supposed to be treated equally and love each other?

Nobody EVER made me go to Church. When I was old enough to ride my bicycle in the street, I would sneak out every Sunday to attend Mass all by myself at St. Bede's Church. I never missed Mass as a kid.

I was raised in the 1960's.

How sad for your mother, that she was dragged to church every day. I grew up during the 70s, and was dragged to Mass nearly every day of the week. If the priest was saying Mass, I got dragged to it. If Mass was said in any possible language that my father knew (He was fluent in 4 languages and could survive in an additional 3) I got dragged to Mass.

Perhaps, for some people, it was a common thing to be dragged to church back in the 60s and 70s. I know it was common occurance for me.

I went to Church and I didn't care what other Women were wearing. I was not going to hire a babysitter because my children didn't want to go to church! As far as cliques you will find that everywhere in school, & at work that excuse for not going to Church is a cop-out.

No, not common for me. I was raised in the 60's.

I went as a small child then when the Minister left my parents quit going and this made me very sad. I just KNEW we should go and that this was a huge mistake and I was like 7.

I have always just felt God was "there".
So no it wasn't crammed down my throat and no one should be beat for not going-how sad.

I had to go 6 days a week for 8 years.

Now I only go if someone dies.

Love and blessings Don
