Especially a religion that makes people scared about something that might happen to them after death…

2007-10-06 21:43:04 · 13 answers · asked by Anonymous

We as people have such a fear of death, not one of us really KNOWS if there's an afterlife or not and some people spend their life trying to figure out if there really is an afterlife or not...

but we have absolutely no problem showing death in movies or books?

I know when people watch movies, they can watch it disconnected from everything that's going on, they'll feel emotion if it's a sad movie, and scared if it's a horror movie, and overall, it's just a movie right?

How can we feel that way, when we know nothing of death ourselves?

All animals fear death, every species wants to live. I don't care how good a life you've lived, if you were given a chance to live while you were on your deathbed, you'd take it. So no one really wants to die.

How could we possibly portray something that frightening, something that no one wants to experience, something that we have no real knowledge of, like we do in movies/ books?

so many people ditch things that they do not know or understand why I will never know and to say something against one thing or another with out studying it is wrong the only way you could say any thing about satanism is to read the satanic bible

if you are an objective and moral thinker, you know that it is wrong to declare that a politician is unfit for public servitude just because he does not believe in christianity.

but the majority of this christian poplulace would almost never elect someone who doesn't believe in god.
obviously everyone is entitled to vote however they wish, but the truth is that most christians do not have neither the desire or cognitive ability to be objective in respect to the viewpoints of people who feel they have justified reasons for not believing in god.

I just read how last week some congressman became the first to ever declare himself an unbeliever.

maybe, if your a christian, you might declare it a victory for god that "secular humanism" is so anathemic to the majority of registered voters, but isn't it disingenuous that this "victory" is held secure by the inablility of the average man to empathize with the rationalized contentions of an unbeliever?

I believe that everyone has "down days" no matter how devout they are to their religion.

How do you know when you are in a spiritual rut and how do you bring yourself out of it?

This question is open to atheists as well... I want lots of perspective here.

I think as long as we're teaching the pseudoscience of Intelligent Design in a science class we should also teach alchemy and astrology as well. Who's with me?

How certain are we that water can't be turned into gold?

Whatever religion you are, or lack of religion for that matter, whatever you believe happens when you die is what happens. For example, if Christians believe they followed Jesus and and are going to be in heaven with Him that is what they get. Or is someone believes they have been bad and thinks they will go to hell, is that where they go. Is it possible to create your own afterlife with simply believing in it?
Cuz I believe my afterlife is going to be a rave party, could it work?
Since we are all energy will our consciousness go "somewhere" or will we just not exist anymore?
(I was kind of kidding about my heaven being a rave, I'm seriously curious about others opinions in this)

My grandmother is dying so i have been in contact with my dad recently. When i express to him how sad i am about my Meme dying, he just says something about how it is god's will and that she will end up in heaven so i shouldn't be worried about her. I don't want to cause a rift in our relationship so i just say, "yeah, you are right. god takes care of everything." I feel bad everytime i do this because i am an athiest and i secretly believe my dad is weak for believing in god. But i don't want to insult him either or make him not like me so i just go along with his religious propaganda. Is this hypocritical? Should i mention to my dad that i don't believe in god at such an awful time when my Meme is dying or should i just let it go and let him believe in his fantasies?

They included Bush as being an Endtimer.. seems lots of these Christians don't care what happens on earth as they are all convinced the "rapture" is here (almost here?)
Is this not a little scary? Or strange.. your thoughts please.

I discovered Buddhism while working a 12-step program of recovery... it felt miraculous to say the least.

But I wonder about these people who have never walked a mile in anyone elses shoes... Why do they always profess to have had the greatest "awakenings"?

I know you are all quoting the bible, but Jesus did not die for our sins. Jesus died because some wacked out politician was afraid that Jesus was becoming too popular and posed a threat to his rule.

The people were following Jesus, they believed in Jesus, and it scared the current day rulers of Rome. So old Pontious Pilot set Jesus up to die.

Jesus Christ was murdered. It is plan and simple. He did not die for my sins or your sins. To be honest he died for the greed of the leaders of Rome.

When I was a child I found a graveyard deep in the swamp that was long forgotten and cleaned it up.
When I couldn't go home I'd go there and sleep knowing humans feared swamps and grave yards at night, I felt safe there.

Why do humans fear such things?

As some of you know I do not believe in a historical jesus. So I would like to take this opportunity to see if you can convince me. Send me whatever links you want and I will read them. I have done quite alot of research on this subject so I am sure I have seen most of them.

Please don't bother with the Josephus quote as it has been proved to be altered.

If you are going to quote the bible (which I would prefer you wouldn't) please only use the original hebrew tanakh as to say the least I am suspicious of the Septuagint and all of it's "offspring" translations.

The NT does not count.

Bonus points to anyone who can provide me with anything pre Paul and his epistles.

Good Luck

Indeed We have revealed to you the Book with the truth; so worship God, devoting your religion purely to Him.

[39:3]
Surely to God belongs pure religion. And those who take besides Him patrons, [say]: ‘We only worship them so that they may bring us near to God’. God will indeed judge between them concerning that about which they differ. Truly God does not guide one who is a liar, a disbeliever.

[39:4]
Had God wanted to take a son, He could have chosen from what He has created whatever He wished. Glory be to Him. He is God, the One, the All-Compelling.

[39:5]
He created the heavens and the earth with the truth. He turns the night into day, and turns the day into night, and He has disposed the sun and the moon, each running for an appointed term. Verily it is He Who is the Mighty, the [ever] Forgiving.
