When I was a child I found a graveyard deep in the swamp that was long forgotten and cleaned it up.
When I couldn't go home I'd go there and sleep knowing humans feared swamps and grave yards at night, I felt safe there.

Why do humans fear such things?

It sounds like you felt safest knowing that other humans were irrationally scared of the place you felt safe. Hurt and frightened kids often discover such places. Sometimes they are old places, long forgotten, but resourceful kids find them, clean them up, and make them their own.

Humans sometimes fear swamps because they are dark water and symbolise the unconscious, that part of themselves it is difficult to see and come to grips with. People fear graves because they symbolise the reality of death in a very concrete way.

Humans fear this because they fear death and the unknown that comes with it (not to mention all the horror movies that involve graveyards). A graveyard is a visual representation of the this unknown, and therefor fearful.
You probably felt safe there because you feared the people that feared the graveyard, and therefor the graveyard became a place of safety.

I went walking in a local cemetery one night and barely missed stepping into a freshly dug open grave.

I'd say that's a rational fear... but easily remedied with a flashlight.

I'd be more worried about gators in the swamp than dead people in the graves...

Because we are inherently illogical and irrational beasts. There is only a very small step that separates us from animals. The sapient creatures that come after us will by necessity be more advanced and above such illogicalities as religion and superstition.

I can go camping there but never sleep above the grave since it would be indeed disrespectful.

Humans fear such things because of mass media. xD!

i think that people just find swamps unpleasant at night.

i think people don't go into graveyards at night because of superstious beliefs such as ghost etc. or it could just be for a sign of respect or no one would bother going to the graveyard in the middle of the night.

Many people have sex at grave sites. So yes a lot of people so sleep there. Why do humans fear them you ask? Why? Are you an alien?
