THE New Catholic Encyclopedia offers three such "proof texts" but also admits: "The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is not taught in the O[ld] T[estament]. In the N[ew] T[estament] the oldest evidence is in the Pauline epistles, especially 2 Cor 13.13 [verse 14 in some Bibles], and 1 Cor 12.4-6. In the Gospels evidence of the Trinity is found explicitly only in the baptismal formula of Mt 28.19." (New Catholic Encyclopedia, 1965, "Trinity, in the Bible", p306, As quoted in "Should you believe in the trinity?")
The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is not taught in the OT. In the NT the oldest evidence is in the Pauline epistles, especially 2 Cor 13.13, and I Cor 12.4-6. In the Gospels evidence of the Trinity is found explicitly only in the baptismal formula of Mt 28.19. ...In many places of the OT, however, expressions are used in which some of the Fathers of the Church saw references or foreshadowings of the Trinity. ... The revelation of the truth of the triune life of God was first made in the NT, where the earliest references to it are in the Pauline epistles. The doctrine is most easily seen in St. Paul's recurrent use of the terms God, Lord, and Spirit. (New Catholic Encyclopedia, 1965, "Trinity, in the Bible", p306)

Hello, all. First off, I want to say that I am a Christian and I have tried to handle this in a loving and forgiving way, but it seems that nothing I do makes anything better. Let me explain. My friend, who I have known for about 2 years I met through bible study. We got very close and talk on the phone at least twice a day. Well, she got really upset at someone in our study really for no reason. She is just acting really ridiculous. Well, ever since she got upset the first time, it is like she is just getting upset over everything. She misinterprets everything that anyone says, she acts like we are all against her(we are a real small group, and are all very close, that is why this is so hard) she is acting victimized or something. She is paranoid that no one likes her, that we are leaving her out of plans, that we criticize her mothering skills, and honestly, that is just simply not the case. We are all very hurt that she is acting like this. We have all told her how much

Please allow me to pick your brain!

1) Why practice? Especially when it imposes on others? Can't God be found in your heart and mind? One time I read that Jesus said "lift a stone and I am there." That is very profound I feel. It means you don't need lavish customs, dress, meeting places or rituals to be true in your heart. Most people respond by saying such practices help them reinforce their faith, but doesn't that mean they can't maintain their faith on their own accord? It seems all to often that religous people go through the actions bc it's easy to do but spend no real time exercising a deeper introspection.

2) Focusing on an afterlife takes the focus off of this life. Please state something more profound than just saying "no it doesn't".

3) Do you think religons creat an in-group/out-group nuance to society?

Thanks.

My grandpa was only 8 years of age when he was left in this world to fend for himself. Life was pretty tough, but through hardwork and determination, he managed to survive and even started a family later. He married my grandma and had a total of 7 children, including my dad. They didn't have much money (my grandpa was even robbed once), but together, this couple brought up 7 kids into healthy young men and woman. We are now a big family, and everyone is married and have a job. A pretty happy environment, and we help each other out...be it financially or emotionally.

My grandpa loved me a lot... he would always give me what I want, so long as he is able to accomplish it for me. He would pull me away when my mom canes me, even when I was wrong

I find that my grandparents have taught their kids the right values even as they struggle to support everyone in the family, and these values are now taught to us... their grandsons and daughters. Knowing this, my grandpa left the world in peace.

I am asking this, because I have seen so many questions from theists asking why atheists "choose" not to believe in God and that it would be safer if we would.

I always thought that to believe in something is somewhat the same as assuming it to be a fact. Since this has to do with nurture and what evidence you've seen, I don't understand how anyone's choice would have any influence on their beliefs.

Can you choose to believe that Oprah is made out of yoghurt, or does believing in something at least have to be compatible with your understanding of reality?

And if so, why did God make my brain so incompatible with His Word?

I know many people who like to turn the believing thing into a game, so here goes... The can of worms is now open! I am going to turn this one around and put it out there that bigger gamble is BELIEVING in God. Here are my reasons:
1) The notion that either God exists or does not (2 possibilities) does not imply that the chances are 50/50, although I will hear many a religious fanatic argue exactly that.
2) If I believe in God and he does not exist, I have just wasted the only life I had by believing, arguing, going to church, doing works etc. on a mistaken notion.
3) If I don't believe, and he does exist and is just, I am a moral person, surely I get a pass. I think God could understand my reasons for not believing
[interject generic thoughtless fanatic statement here i.e. "you have to believe, you have to have faith..."]
My response: "I have faith in many things; it comes from within, and it is personal. I just don't like blind faith, it is dangerous and growth-stunting"

Twice today I've seen someone claim to be a scientist and then go on to say something that a person with those credentials would never believe. Does not even the fact that they are blatantly lying to convince people of religion make them realise that religion is a lie?

1. How do you define the purpose for your life? Is it only about being born, grow up. live, eat, drink, & die then its all done?
2. Who do you believe you are? Is it just flesh & blood one day just dis-appers like a tree or plant or animal?
3. Do you believe if there is spirit or soul or you believe there is no such thing just flesh n blood in the process of evolution becoming something else?
4. If there is a soul or spirit what will happed after you die?

I just read an answer to a question about "Harry Potter" books. Besides being ridiculously long, the answer mentioned that God hates spiritism, black magic, fortune tellers, etc. I've always believed these things were phony anyway. Since the Bible tells us God hates them, do think it means that there might be some validity to all this hocus-pocus?

Will we grow? Will we survive? Will we establish ourselves? Can we establish ourselves as a legitimate religion without falling into the traps of orthodoxy vs. heresy, fundamentalism, and prosletization that plauge other organized religions? Or will we simply fade away as another silly teenage rebel fad? What can we do now to ensure that our religion and tradition will be around in the next century, and will still be something we can be proud of?

I always thought a black atheist was uncommon, you know because people mostly consider blacks to be very religious. But I think I have saw a few on here. I am learning more and more about society, and its really tripping me out. I am not an atheist, I am christian, but of course your beliefs is your business, but do your families know? I know my grandfather would pass out if I ever told him I was an atheist....lol

If once a person is saved by God's grace how can one lose one's salvation? Doesn't that negate the whole Jesus dying on the cross thing?

If people can still lose salvation after Christ died for all of us, shouldn't we have just told Jesus to forget about dying on the cross for us? How is it any different now than in times when jews sacrificed for their sins if salvation could be lost?

Also if salvation were lost, wouldn't it be impossible to be saved again since Christ died only once for our sins?

DO people like Roman Catholics think what Christ did was a waste? THe law was fufilled by Christ was it not?

Im really looking for answers to these questions from people who think salvation can be lost.

Leviticus 17:11 still in the Hebrew and in the Jewish Scriptures even after the temple was destroyed and Jesus fulfilled this-and the Jewish people cant take it out of their bible because it is there!

"The life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to make atonement/forgiveness for your sins." once on the altar and then in Jesus God almighty as Isaiah promised the prince of peace the Son given, the child to be born. Isaiah 9:6

why did Moses say thus saith the Lord-that we have to have an innocent blood atonement to have our sins forgiven???

1. God LOVES you and offers a wonderful PLAN for your life.

"God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" John 3:16.

Why is it that people are not experiencing the abundant life?

2. Man is SINFUL and SEPARATED from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God's love and plan for his life.

Man Is Sinful
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23.

3. Jesus Christ is God's ONLY provision for man's sin. Through Him you can know and experience God's love and plan for your life.

"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" Romans 5:8.

4. We must individually RECEIVE Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives.

"As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name" John 1:12
