I always thought a black atheist was uncommon, you know because people mostly consider blacks to be very religious. But I think I have saw a few on here. I am learning more and more about society, and its really tripping me out. I am not an atheist, I am christian, but of course your beliefs is your business, but do your families know? I know my grandfather would pass out if I ever told him I was an atheist....lol

There are many black atheists, which shows you how far our people have gotten away from our culture and values, from Africa to slavery to the religious fervor of our great grandparents...

There are also black atheists who come from different countries. Take Barack Obama's Kenyan father. He was raised as a Muslim (Kenya has an Islamic minority) and became an atheist.

Like him, most black atheists are intellectuals. Like some intellectuals in other races/cultures, they cannot associate the intelligent study of their various fields with God's gift of a brain.

I am sorry..I didn't mean to add my own personal views to this post but I have strong feelings toward this. Why? It makes me angry that so many people feel you cannot be INTELLIGENT and a CHRISTIAN.

A little bit under half of my family, that is not in the military, went to Ivy League schools and they are all Christian. They weren't just THERE they did research and are at the top of their fields.

It also disturbs me when any people get away from their values and traditions in the name of PROGRESS.

I don't dislike atheists and I support anyone doing what they wish. In this secular nation the right to be an atheist is a given...Also, God has the power to make everyone believe in Him if he so chose, but he gave us all FREE WILL to come to Him as we desire, so who am I to complain?

I said earlier that most atheists I have known are very kindly people.

Oh well...I just wish things could be different.

It's in view that black households are nearer than different races (ok, perhaps Asians will rival), and the black group is predominantly Christian, so via being a black atheist it is form of like you are going in opposition to your household.

I'm not black, but I belong to an atheist group that has several black members in it, including female black atheists. You are in the minority, but you're not alone. And, I do think the black atheist community is growing, judging by the personalities I've seen on the Internet, such as the Infidel Guy, who has an Internet Radio Show and has been on TV.

I've seen a number of black atheists here, meaning they had "African avatars." I think "Kadija" is a black woman. Most of the others are older black men.

Edit: With your question in mind, I counted 7 different black atheists in this forum yesterday afternoon and evening. Six had male avatars.

I've never understood how an African-American could be a Christian. Christianity was the slave owner's religion. The slave owner forced the slave to convert to Christianity. The slave lost his/her freedom, language, religion and culture.

What horrible things people do to one another.

Look at my contacts. There is one there. His name is "RUN JAMES RUN".
I'm not black, but my mom would blame herself if she knew I was an atheist. In her view, she would worry about not having raised her son correctly. She's Catholic.

if Sho Nuff were still here he'd tell you, although I've doubted his dedication to atheism.
