We're all familiar with the Bible verse which says "God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worhsip him in spirit and in truth."

But, in Genesis I've found something a bit different.
Genesis 18:1-4
And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre; and he sat
in the tent door in the heat of the day.
And he lift up his eyes and looked and lo, three men stood by him
and when he saw them he ran to meet them from the tent door and
bowed himself before the ground
and said, My Lord, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass
not away I pray thee from thy servant.
Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched and wash your feet and
rest yourseleves under tree.

It seems that not only did Abraham SEE God here, but he also thought
he was physical enough for his feet to be washed with water.

And...in the first verse I mentioned it says God is a Spirit, with a capital S. Doesn't that mean the Holy Ghost is God?

So God is physical yes?

"Being an atheist means you feel hopelessness."

For those atheists who have left a religion... has your atheism caused you emotional distress, or on you on the whole been happier in your atheistic worldview?

Answers only from atheists, please and thank you.

I really want to know the answer to this question, because I don't want to make generalisations; also to see how atheism correlates to the subject "spirituality and religion".

Because this question is to try and come to a concensus as to what it means to be spiritual and atheist, I would ask that only atheists answer this question. After the three days have elapsed, I'm going to put it to a vote. I ask that only atheists take part in this vote, as it is their definition of their beliefs that I'm looking for.

"Mythology is different from religion, in that the former people generally don't deem to be real, and the latter people still subscribe to. (Consider mythology religions that have largely fell by the wayside.)

I would think atheists would be indifferent to mythology, since most people don't take it to be real. (How many people are left that worship the Greek deities, for instance?) "

This is one of my points! How many religions have withstood the test of time? Why is Christianity so alive and well and growing? Why hasn't it been proven WRONG and fallen by the wayside as these others have?

"Atheists have not thought much about their stance on the question of God, or they would believe."

Fellow atheists, did you dismiss the notion of god without careful consideration? If you deconverted from a religion... same question?

Most Christians I ask say if you want to know something, then look in the Bible. Even a revelation MUST line up with the Bible says or else its a false revelation.

But in Matthew 4 Satan used the scriptural writings to convince Jesus to cast himself from a pinnacle of the temple. How do we know Satan isn't a master at convincing us to err with scripture? Isn't prayer and personal revelation the only way out of this snare?

"Atheists believe in nothing."

I will start. I believe in love, family, rational thought, beauty, the pursuit of happiness, freedom of speech, and many other concepts...

Fellow atheists, in what do you believe?

Since religion and God are not real to you and it causes such burden on your hearts that you feel you must relieve the believers of their beliefs that you hang out in the religion forum I just started wondering if it bothers you as much about those who believe in Mythology? Do you also read those questions and post in that forum as well trying to sway them from their belief in Mythology?

I'm asking sincere questions here out of a desire to understand and know where you guys are coming from. I don't understand why you are attacking me.

When the Messiah comes, he will be a man-a mere man with the ability to draw the people together and turn to G-d. G-d is One. There is no G-d but G-d.

They say that in every generation there is a man who is capable of being the Messiah, but the time has not been right for him to show his face. We, the world, must make the world ready for him by finding mercy and peace with each other--a time, if you would, of a Messianic age to welcome him.

That is a whole other story.
I am hosting Christmas at my home. I extended an invitation to my brothers "friend" to join us at Christmas. My fiancee said that if my brother brought his lover, he nor his son would come to my home to celebrate Christmas with us. He said he is careful what he exposes his son to and I certainly understand his point of view with regard to his son.
On top of that I have asked my brother to give me away at my wedding in April. My father is deceased and I have no other male relative I am close to. His lover is behaving like he is coming to my wedding even though I have not formally invited him. I do not have a problem with who he is with, but I have other people to consider and not sure what I should do. I live in the bible belt - need I say more? I want my brothers friend to feel part of the family, but I also do not want to offend or make anyone uncomfortable. I also do not want drama at Christmas or my wedding.
What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Seriously why do you have to bother me when I'm at home? Why do you insist on coming into my house to "teach" me the word of god? I don't force my beliefs on you, why are you forcing it on me!

When disasters like Tsunamis or Hurricanes or Tornados or Earthquakes take likes and destroy cities, do you view it as the act of a vengeful God killing sinners? Or when these things happen do you look at it as Mother Nature striking out against the species that's destroying this planet? When nature kills humans, is it controled by God, or is it Nature's population control? Personally, I've always felt that distasters like Katrina were nothing more than Nature teaching us humans a lesson or two.

God actually talking to you directly as in face-to-face conversation? Is that the kind of evidence you require to believe in God? Just wondering. Thanks.
