"Mythology is different from religion, in that the former people generally don't deem to be real, and the latter people still subscribe to. (Consider mythology religions that have largely fell by the wayside.)

I would think atheists would be indifferent to mythology, since most people don't take it to be real. (How many people are left that worship the Greek deities, for instance?) "

This is one of my points! How many religions have withstood the test of time? Why is Christianity so alive and well and growing? Why hasn't it been proven WRONG and fallen by the wayside as these others have?

Christianity is the only religion that has a crucified and risen again Savior. All other religious prophets, messiahs, etc. are dead and still in their graves.
For anyone who is truly looking for answers to the age-old question as to which religion is right:

There are far older religions than Christianity that have millions of followers and they are thriving. Hinduism which originated in 3000BC has 650 million followers. Judaism which originated in 1200BC as well as Taoism (6th century BC) with 30 million followers. Buddhism(480 BC) has 310 million followers. Islam which has been around since the 7th century AD currently has 840 million followers and is said by many to be the fastest growing religion in the world. No religion has been proved wrong. Religions far older than Christianity have not fallen by the wayside by any means and they gain followers all over the world. They are alive and well. Longevity proves nothing.

Duration of a belief system is not enough to be true. The earth is flat, the sun orbits around the earth etc, were commonly held beliefs for a long time.

If you truly want to engage in a debate over the logic of religion or god, start reading Thomas Aquinas, then move onto Kant and Aristotle is always good. These people put up very good logical arguments for the existence in god.

If you read and think about what these people said about god please come back. I always look forward to a good debate

Because historically, anyone who questioned it, got burned. Literally and figuratively. Christianity is a very aggressive religion, what with the wars and the missionaries corrupting the noble natives of far off lands. Yes, it's withstood the test of time so far. That doesn't make it right.

Because, it is the truth and it shall never depart from the world.

As for why Atheists don't hang out in Mythology is simple. Myth is just that and all pretty much agree it is false and worth little more than a history lesson.

Atheists hang out in "religion forums" for simple reasons. Debate and hate. Those that are the latter I give little time, but those that wish to debate are fine with me. God is not afraid of questions, look at Job! So, Gods children should not be afraid of them either. Instead they should be firmly grounded in their beliefs and ready to discuss the love of God with those who genuinely wish to talk and listen with open minds.

C.S. Lewis was an atheist too, until he studied and question God and came to know him as Lord.

Okay, I just feel the need to point out how incredibly wrong you are.

Christianity is actually a lot younger than a lot of the other religions, including (but not excluding to) Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judism (from which Christianity came from), and...whoa, guess what? Atheism is a lot older than Christianity too.

Maybe Christianity has lasted because it's gives leaders, like Ted Haggard, the sort of control they want.

It has been proved wrong. Why Christians don't accept that is another matter. One reason is that is has been splintered into a thousand different sects, none of which accepts the others or resembles the original. In effect a thousand different religions.

it is only 2000 years old. many of the ancient greek and roman beliefs were in place much longer than that. and the Native Americans have a verbal history spanning 15,000 years.
some of the celts can claim longer than that is held in their oral records.

the greek , roman , and Pagan religions are not mainstream but they are still very much alive. we just do not advertise ourselves
(some of us still worry about the crusades and the burning times and such)

but Christianity is not the ONLY religion that is alive and well. It's not even the oldest! Doesn't the existence of other (and older) religions that have stood the test of time prove Christianity can't be the whole answer?

Why do nutso cults thrive? Because it appeals to some people. Mainstream religion is no different, and old ones died out because new and growing ones like Christianity forced them out. Christianity has always been VERY pro active in getting more people to join up. With that, how wouldn't it survive? That does not make it more true, it only means it has more people...which helps it survive...
