Every year around this time, families gather together for the season of giving thanks for the harvest. Truthfully, I am tired of turkey, stuffing, etc. I'd like some new ideas for Thanksgiving dinner. My family is very small - really just my daughter and me. I like being at home, but I don't treasure all the cooking. I just want to relax . What do you think about something different?

Hi, as a kid our version of thanksgiving was always going to grandmas, it was stressful, not very much fun and always felt like we were just going through the motions. Now that I have 2 small children ages (at time of) 28 months and 11 months and a husband(dog too but she doesn't factor into this lol) I want to make new traditions, fun ones that are not just going through the motions. My parents can't come but a close family friend in his late 50's will be coming as well. I want to trim the tree(we are cutting a fresh one the sunday prior) eat a nice meal and beyond that I don't know what else to do, football is out, no one but my husband enjoys it currently. Any ideas? We live in iowa, in a house in a small town near des moines. Also meal ideas would be great, I don't really know what are traditional foods. thanks everyone in advance

My son will find out on Saturday if he's off work on Thanksgiving, and if he is, he's going to come home for the holiday. I know that one of his roommates doesn't have a car, so most likely he won't go home. He and my son were the first ones to move in their apartment, and we took him shopping with us and then out to lunch before we drove back home. So it's not like he's a stranger to us. I was just thinking about inviting him to come to our home with our son so he can celebrate the holiday instead of sitting in his room all day. Have any of you done anything similar to this?

I was just wondering what everyones views are about teaching the dangers of Drug and Alcohol abuse in Islamic culture.
Do you feel that the Masjid offers enough information for youths about drugs and how they look(especially in countries where drug use is prevalent)?
Do you feel Islamic Communities offer adequate treatment programs?
Do you feel enough is being done to discourage the use of drugs? Such as education?

I know some will say why would you need to know about drugs when your a Muslim, I just want to say I have worked with youths who have mistakenly or had been tricked into taken some type of drug because they actually were unaware it was a drug...

We've only been going out for 3 weeks now. I am definitely getting him something, just not sure what is appropriate since this is my first time in this situation. I know this question begs for smart-*** remarks, but if you could limit them it would be much appreciated.

Assalaam Alaykum

I started a job in Islamic school and was put on trail to see whether I was suited to it. Alhamdulillah they agreed I was. However the head wanted me to work 5 days but I cannot as I am at uni on Friday (doing my degree). He asked me to drop my degree so I could work there full time. I explained I couldn't. He then had a word with the teacher and said it may not be possible for her to have the job.

So I thought Alhamdulillah it doesn't matter. So I didn't turn up the next day (as I needed to look for another job as it is linked with my degree) yet the teacher said the head is upset you didn't come in, he can't beleive you did that... I was shocked as I didnt do anything worng. I misunderstood the situation and assumed he was going to tell me to leave.

I rung and texted the head apologizing, yet he hasn't got back to me. Th teacher really needs me there but I dont want to go till it is cleared with the head. What should I do? Leave it how it is or ring again?

As we all celebrate this great festival of lights & sweets, what we find that in the name of lights we explode crackers thus increase both air & noise pollution. The sweet we eat is made from adulterated milk which can bring innumerous harm to our health. We go out for purchasing new items for ourselves & our home but get struck in big traffic jams apart being cheated by the local merchants who sell out of date & spoiled articles at expensive rates. We distributes gift items to friends & relatives, which actually happens to be exchanging those pieces which we got from them, just the giver & taker get changed. We buy gold & other ornaments at higher rates just because it is auspicious to do so as being advised by holy priest & astrologers, which on any normal days we could have got in much lesser competitive rates. This festival means visiting of Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth at our place of living & work, but when the festival is over we find the balance left in our accounts will not be enough to carry us till the end of the month. We love this festival & pray to God the almighty to give us peace of mind & prosperity for the whole years so that next year we again repeat these things during this great festival of light & sweets. A Happy & prosperous Diwalli to all!

...my teacher would pass around "sticky hickeys" to his pupils. He dressed up as Mr. Hickey Man, did a stunt by flying on a helicopter, and dropped a dummy that resembled him off the roof.

Everybody laughed...

I wondered what happened to that teacher? Nowadays, students would sue him for being a pedophile.

Nowadays, nobody have no sense of humor. Even Saturday Night live isn't funny anymore. What happened to plain old unharmful fun?

Well my mom's family lives in a different city than my dad's family, so every thanksgiving we rotate who we go to. And I KNEW with all my heart that we went to my mom's family last year but my mom kept saying, NO, NO. but now i found proof that we went because of something i wrote to my friends in a notebook last thanksgiving.

So i told my parents (even though we've already made plans and told my mom's side of the family that we're coming) that we did go there and showed them what i wrote. And now they're in a big fight because my dad is like, "well that's not fair i want to see my family too, it's not fair to them." and my mom is like, "Well we already made plans! Nobody knows! I can't just tell them we're not coming!!" and they're yelling at each other.

I feel really bad since this is my fault. what should i do? who's family do you think we should go to?

Alright, since this place obviously isn't for Ramadan questions, I'd like to take this opportunity to actually learn something.

1.
As a Muslim (I think I'm in the right place?), what are your personal thoughts on the Burqa? What is your opinion on the "l'affaire du voile" (Veil contreversy in France)

2.
What are some scriptural references for veils and women's rights?

3.
What do you think of "modern" music, particularly rap or "rock 'n roll"?

4.
Do you think Muslims in the upper ranks of society in the Middle East have deviated from the true teachings of Islam (whatever they may be?) on issues such as women's education, state religion etc.

5.
What do you think of Jews and Christians - "long-lost cousins", "complete strangers" or "neighbour that you really don't like so you build a very tall fence and then the city tells you to take it down"?

Enlighten me?

From the ignorant little infidel,
