tWell,It all started, as the the First Thanksgiving and I guess the Pilgrims were board and so they invited the Indians and that was the first time the Pilgrims had friends. The Pilgrims and Indians did fish. But I guess they wanted something special. Then with one of the presidents decided to make the turkey the official bird and one turkey is free to fly around.Thanksgiving is a special Holiday and should be shared with love ones. Take care. Good luck with the question.

Turkey is a bird native to North America. Supposedly, that's what the pilgrims ate at thanksgiving. Chicken and fish would have been familiar to Europeans before they came here, whereas turkey is a truly "American" food.

Turkey was avaible to the pilgrims more so than chicken or other type of meat.

Personally, I am bored of turkey and would be willing to do salmon or ham. Unfortunately, friends and family prefer the traditional turkey meal.

Maybe Chickens weren't around at that time of the day, so they shot at a few turkeys.
And Turkeys are bigger than Chickens, can feed more people.
And they ate fish at dinner too, but Fish doesn't taste as good.
