Say you invite over company, and someone bring a guest. You greet them at the door, and find out (from visual cues, accent, etc) said guest is from a totally random place, whose unknown arriving-at- a-stranger's-house customs are probably wildly different from your own. How do you greet them, when you haven't had a chance to ask where they are from?

I'm scheduled to go to work in about three hours; however, I haven't been sleeping well lately and running after a 12 mo. old all day. I did take a nap, when she did, this afternoon but I still feel really groggy and disorientated...kind of lightheaded too. Should I go in to work (it's a four hour shift) or call in sick? I called in sick last Wednesday as my daughter had a fever.

My best friend and I just got and invitation to a house warming party for one of her co-workers at work. On the invitation is a list of things she wants in each of her rooms based on the themes, the size sheets needed for her bed and her daughters beds, what bed sizes she needs for example: Twin and Queen Size, the color she wants for her walls etc... and she's asking people to give her these things. It's a BYOB (Bring your own beer) and BMS (bring me stuff). With the job she has she can afford this things herself.

Is this correct etiquette or not? I think it's pretty tacky. And this isn't the first time she or any of her others freinds have done this.

What's your opinion?

Paying someone to say hello to customers so that they'll feel better about themselves and spend more money is so transparently insincere, sychophantic and cynical.

Or dumb a*** is another one I've seen a lot. If the answer was so obvious to the person asking the question, they wouldn't need to ask it, would they. Duh back to all of you who have responded like that.

Those who answer questions with "duh" or some other disdainful remark, can you explain what your point is?

Is it possible you could cut some people slack and consider that not everyone in this world is exposed to the same exact terms, phrases, culture, people that you are?

(It's not going to seem clever to answer this with "duh" so don't waste your keystrokes. ;)

I decided to stop by a Church's Fried Chicken one night at around 10 pm, and I ordered only ONE drumstick and the guy said that I would have to wait thirty minutes. Out of impatience and hunger I respectfully and calmly yelled to the guy: "THIRTY MINUTES! ARE YOU STUPID!" The guy replied: What the f***!
Since I was in the drive-thru I just escaped from line and sped away.
Now, it's a chicken restaurant! They should always have chicken ready. It's like going to a burger place and not having any burgers available or like going to a gas station and there's no gas!
I could understand if I went to an auto shop or a Home Depot or even the DMV telling me to wait 30 minutes for some fried chicken; but at a place that sells chicken to not have chicken is messed up.

So who's fault do you think it was?
-His for not having good customer service
-Me for being impatient.

We've complained so many times to our boss, and although he's spoken to her about how to act and work, she still annoys us. She's got some mental issues, yet she's so irresponsible and always hangs out with the guys in the shop. She's always on her work and cell phone and talks as she works. It's annoying to me, mostly, because I sit across from her, and let's just say that I know more about her that I need to!! There have been so many times where I would like to just scream and tell her to shut up and to stop acting like she is still in high school. This is her first office job and it shows. There is no way she would have lasted this long in a "real" company. I'm trying to find another job, but the only thing this place has going for them is that the health insurance is free.

I've noticed that some people who are Italian but are asked if they are Jewish (because they "look" Jewish, whatever that means) get really offended by this. Why?

Anyone of Italian or Italian American heritage, do you get asked if you are Jewish (for example if someone doesn't know your name, or if your name isn't obviously Italian)?

Do you get annoyed or angry? If so, why?

I bring this up because my best friend's name is Marcella (pretty obviously Italian) and she always wears a cross. A saleslady (she had give her a credit card) asked her if she was Jewish last week while we were shopping & she freaked out! She kept saying don't they see my cross/ my name, and so on.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why she would be so annoyed and also anyone Italian has this ever happened to you & how did you react.
Thank you, Nicole

door for them to catch, and if so, how far do they have to be behind you for you to wait. Such as, do you wait for people 10 steps or less behind you, or up to 50 feet behind you, or how long?

People who think they're better than someone else because of the sheer fact that they exist typically hate themselves, in my experience. People are so rude and disrespectful!

I know I may anger some people with this question. But, I'm sick of everywhere I go that someone wants a tip. I just posted a question about tipping movers. But I thinking in general tipping has gone out of control among common people. It used to be only for waiters/waitresses because they make 1/2 of minimum wage and pizza delivery drivers cuz they use gas. Now, it I go to pick up my pizza, they have a tip jar or if I pay with a credit card, there is a tip line. Geez, is not paying for the service enough anymore. I know that those jobs are minimum wage, but we all have to pay our dues. When I was young, I worked in retail, convenience stores, etc and never got tipped. I was never a waitress. Quite frankly, I think it is degrading. I have to kiss butt just for someone to leave me a buck or two. First of all, it is a waitresses or any service workers job to be nice. If they could predict that someone will not leave a tip, does that give them the authority to be rude???

or actually, just in general, when you come across someone you don't know, what do you do? Do you acknowledge them or just pretend they aren't there? Also, where are you from??

I'm just real curious about this because I just moved from the northern east coast and we've always been rated as some of the most unfriendly and rude people in the states, other than New York. I moved down south where people are supposed to be a lot friendlier yet, I've always talked to anyone I come across, no matter where I am.. walking down the street, standing in line, in the aisles in the grocery store.. it doesn't matter, and in situations like that, down here, people seem alot less likely to say hi or even acknowledge you. So I was wondering if maybe it had something to do with what part of the world you were from??

I'm not a Rhodes Scholar ; but it takes one to decipher some questions , only to find that it made no sense anyway . Then lo-and behold , nine times out of ten ,when you come across one of these gems- there is one equally non-sensical answer that is mysteriously a" best answer" to a question that was as unintelligible as the answer ; along with the fact that is was the ONLY "answer".
