before someone come close to give a hug, just extend your hand. A handshake maybe more up your alley.

Definately extend your hand for a handshake. If the person in question is moving towards you, add in a small step backwards. Most people should get the hint. If someone hugs you and you didn't want them to, you can gently push away and say "sorry, I'm not the huggy type." (This works will if you sound a bit sheepish because it keeps most people from feeling you are putting them off.)
Bottom line is that if you don't want to be hugged, you shouldn't have to endure it.

When someone comes toward you for a hug, take a step backward. That bit of body language should be enough for the person trying to do the hugging, to back off. Everyone has a right to their own personal space.

Wow, I love to get hugged. But if you don't that's okay. Just offer your hand or say "I think I'm coming down with something". That way you don't hurt someone's feelings. But people you know, you could tell them that you don't like to be hugged.

I would step back & raise my hand like everyone else has said but I enjoy hugs, I just don't like kisses & handshakes, they make me feel super uncomfortable. But what can you do when someone extends their hand in order to shake yours? Somehow putting my hand out then lifting it up to my nose wiggling my fingers & poking out my tongue doesn't seen appropriate.

Me too. I have a 3 ft personal comfort zone. It's tough when someone comes at ya.

i'm sorry u dont like hugs. personally i m a big fan of hugs. i think just extending your hand before they get the idea of hugging you will deter them from hugging you and they will shake your hand instead.

Start it out as a joke, like saying "Um... you're in my personal bubble, do you mind?" but say it like a joke. When the person responds however, say "But really, I'm not a very big 'hug' person" ..................and then teach them your secret hand shake ^_^

I am only a touchy feely person with my kids! My family isn't even touchy feely, so I am put off by this, as well. Just step back and say, "No, thanks.", if it is someone you don't wish to hug. It has worked for me.

Just put your hands up in the air, and smile sheepishly. They should get the idea rather quickly.
