1) You believe in a god that does not exist. You interpret positive events/feelings as rewards/boons from this non-existent god and negative events/feelings as punishments from this non-existent god (or his antipode).
2) You believe in a god that does exist and who takes an active role in rewarding prayer/need and punishing bad behavior.

Imagine yourself in both positions. From this perspective, could you tell the difference?

About 94% of Americans (more or less) believe in some sort of God or deity. Now, they may not all be of the same religion, and they may be very diverse, but when was the last time we have gotten 94% of the population to agree on anything?

Since so many are believers, it seems like people have an innate need and desire to have a higher being in their lives. What does that tell you?

Oh, and I'm an agnostic.

Catholics, you all know that Jesus the Good Shepherd left us an earthly shepherd, Peter and the popes, when He told Peter: "..feed my lambs.. ..feed my sheep" (John 21:15-17).

But, did you know that your earthly shepherd sends you letters? That's right: YOU'VE GOT MAIL !! Have you been reading your mail?

No? Well, a letter from the pope to you is called an "encylical". For example, here is one of the latest letters the pope wrote to you. called "Deus Caritas Est" (On Christian Love - God is Love) :
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20051225_deus-caritas-est_en.html

One of my favorites by John Paul II is "Redemptor Hominus" (Redeemer of Man):

You can serch many more here:

So, brothers and sisters, isn't it time to check your mail box?

does being open-minded mean you should keep asking the same question over and over again? i keep seeing these questions asking how open-minded atheists are. atheists are people just like everyone else. some lie, some are honest. some are greedy, some give all they can. is the sole basis for someone being open-minded whether or not they accept the existence of a god as being fact? there's a difference between looking at the different aspects of religion and making a decision, and just blindly making a decision. and just as there are christians who do one or the other, there are atheists as well who do one or the other. i'm sure there are many atheist who just accept there is no god, just as there are many christian who accept there is a god, without question. however, if you were to ask an atheist who hasn't considered the possibility of a god, i doubt you'd get as many close-minded responses as you would from christians who haven't considered the possibility of no god.

Would you read a question about someone's health problems & start a rant about how "if they just stopped being so negative about everything their pain and their illness would be magically healed? " Do you assume that everyone on here with fibromyalgia and other pain problems caused them because of their "negative thinking"? When you dont even know that person, or how they have lived their lives?

Would you mock people who ask others to lend support through prayer because they believe in the power of prayer?

would you come onto a site like this and ask questions then block every single person who disagreed with you and try to build up your own little base of people who agree with your holier than thou, know it all attitude?

If you were a addict do you assume everyone who has a problem is also an addict or chose a lifestyle that resulted in them having hard times?

Everything has a gender.............

Ziploc Bags are Male - they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

Copiers are Female - once turned off it takes a while to warm them up again. It's an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed.

A Tire is Male - it goes bald and it is often over-inflated.

Sponges are Female - they're soft, squeezable and retain water.

Your thoughts?

Not meant to be rude or mean, just for the laughs.

I am doing thanksgiving this year and it grosses me out when people come in the house with shoes because these shoes have been everywhere stepping on everything. We don't wear shoes inside and we all know that. However, many people wear shoes inside.

What is a polite way to tell guests or hint to them to take their shoes off? How can I make it comfortable for them to do so?

Doesn’t the learning process rely on an open book/blank slate approach to potential knowledge? And isn’t religion all about preconceived concepts of gods, creation, heaven etc? Aren’t preconceived concepts going to at least hinder if not completely obstruct the flow of knowledge? Does this neatly explain the problem that creationists have, with their preconceived notions of god and creation which doesn’t match up with any discoveries science, the quest for knowledge, has made? Would the solution to poor education standards in countries like the USA be to get rid of these preconceived notions which hinder the learning process? Are there enough questions in this question?

use. I like Joel Osteen and his messages are so inspiring! I love the bible but thought something more "spirtual" and "new age" would be nice for a quote or line at the end of my messages board post, email, etc. Not "God Bless You" or "Acts 10:38" type thing. Thanks.

Or could it be that he is in fact, NOT worshipping her, and simply doing it out of respect and as a way to honor her, much like us Catholics do, when we are falsely accused of worshipping all of our false Gods (that we are supposedly just too afraid to tell everybody about?")

Seriously, have you ever thought of that?
