What many intentionally fail to realize is that Darwin was merely making assumptions. He had done this repeatedly throughout his book. It was 'just a thought' so to speak. He felt that maybe some day future advances in technology and research would finally provide solid evidence for his assumptions. It never happened.
He probably never fathomed that people would go to such lengths as to even fabricate information and then, force it upon innocent children. He probably never saw it coming the atrocities and perversion that would spring from this incomplete and errant philosophical view.
But it was an only glimmer of hope for the faithless and misguided. People saw and seized the opportunity. Different groups expounded upon it to suit their own desires and purposes. Some used it as mode of attack on Christianity. Some used it as a means to explain a life without purpose. Others used it to justify racism and imperialism. But more horrific is that people have used it as a tool for mass murder as in Hitler's Germany.
What's happening today with the theory of evolution is one more good example of how evil people will use anything (including religious beliefs) as a means to an end.

Ok, I am Christian and also have a degree in Evolutionary ecology. You are entitled to your opinions, but you are not entitled to voice an opinion of ignorance. At least try to educate yourself first.
1.) The father of genetics is actually a MONK named Mendel. He began the research that led to our discovery of genes and genetic expression. Darwin put another piece into the puzzle by observing that there were animals on an island (isolated population) that were similar, but different than animals we see anywhere else. In other words, when two populations become isolated from each other genetically (they're not interbreeding), they begin to take different evolutionary paths. This is because of different environments, different sexual selection (what the organism finds "attractive" in a mate), and simple random selection. This is a very well-documented event that happens with every organism, including humans (it's why we have different "races"). So actually Darwin was very intelligent. But he didn't figure everything out, he gave us a jumping-point to continue further research.
2.) Darwin never "saw an ape and thought it resembled a human so he said hmmm MAYBE we come from apes." Get your facts straight. The theory of our relation to primates doesn't come from Darwin. The FACT is, we are 99% similar to chimpanzees. But that doesn't mean we "came from them." It means we are more closely related to them than to, say, ungulates (hoofed mammals). Because, after all, all things are related on this earth. We all use the same form of energy in our cells (ATP). I don't find this scary, I find it amazing and beautiful! We're all carrying on life!
3.) EVERYTHING in science is called a theory. This is standard, because in science we always leave the minute chance that our results are due to some random event that we didn't see. Just because it's labeled a theory doesn't mean it doesn't have TONS of evidence supporting it.
There is a lot of evidence for evolution, and it's a beautiful process that makes SO much sense. To me, I thank God that He is powerful enough to create such a versatile, ever-changing planet, and for giving his creations a mechanism or a process (evolution) to survive through the changes, both large and small. Evolution simply means that life will go on. How much more beautiful and astounding is that, than to say that God just created this static planet and we're all the same generation after generation. How boring.
EDIT: If you want evidence, look up the evolution of the eye, or the evolution of whales. Both have a nearly complete evolutionary record, and they're both amazing and astounding! For a good book on the evolution of whales, read "What you See in Clear Water."
EDIT 2: The theory of Evolution does not encompass the origin of life and the universe, and never has. It is merely a process by which life continues on. For origin theories, you really want to talk to a microbiologist.
If you want my personal opinion, I believe there was a divine hand in it. Some of my colleagues may disagree with may, some may not. It's difficult, because it happened so long ago and is not still going on today. Evolution, on the other hand, is going on today. We see it constantly! Any rancher that has ever bred their cattle to bring out certain traits is exploiting evolution. We've even crossed different species to create new species (brocciflower, beefalo, ligers), and yet people still don't believe that evolution can create new species. As someone pointed out below, germs became resistant to penicillin. That's because penicillin killed all of the germs that it could, but there was a small percentage of germs that had a gene making them resistant to the drug. With all of the susceptible germs gone, only the resistant ones multiplied, and whammo - we have a new infectuous strain that is resistant to penicillin. The same thing happened with HIV, which is why we haven't found a cure yet. It evolves around the drugs too quickly for them to be effective.
I hope I'm explaining this well - I would be happy to explain the whole process further if you would like.

Darwin was "probably right" to assume evolution occured, based on what people thought they knew at the time.
However the theory of evolution has changed quite a bit since his days and the said theory has had to be tweeked, stretched and bent beyond imagination to fit the evidence which is being found today.
NB the creation truth only had to be written once and does not need to be changed because it fits in harmony with the evidence found.
The sad thing is that the dodgy theory of evolution is hanging on by a shoestring and is still peddled as fact by those who are deluded by it.

actually he spent quite a bit of time traveling the world. the galapagos islands is what first triggered him off. from one species of finch many other species evolved. same with the salt water iguanas. and the tortoises. and a theory never means an assumption even in common english. when talking about science a theory is an explanation. in common english a theory is a hypothesis. maybe you should get your head out of the ground and do some research.

When it was just him...then he was just one person, with his own thinking. And what person does not question their own ideas when there have been no similar ideas to go on? But now there have been other people to look into it, study it, put it to technology and knowledge he did not have, and find that he may have been right.

Because sometimes "common sense" will inevitably lead you to truths that may be less than comfortable.
If you don't believe in evolution, then I trust that you NEVER use any antibiotic other than penicillin, right? If nothing evolves, then the original antibiotic must work just as well.
How stupid are you????? LOL>...

it is much easier for a human to go with the evolution theory because it puts them at the top of the food chain and in charge. by eliminating God ...a human answers to no one.

People believe that Darwin was right because they can't admit that there is a higher being that they should worship. Darwin said that if his theory couldn't be proven by a certain time period, that he was wrong. Well, that time has come and gone and there is no proof of evolution. People believe what scientists say, and for some reason scientists don't see that science and religion can both be right and support each other.
