does being open-minded mean you should keep asking the same question over and over again? i keep seeing these questions asking how open-minded atheists are. atheists are people just like everyone else. some lie, some are honest. some are greedy, some give all they can. is the sole basis for someone being open-minded whether or not they accept the existence of a god as being fact? there's a difference between looking at the different aspects of religion and making a decision, and just blindly making a decision. and just as there are christians who do one or the other, there are atheists as well who do one or the other. i'm sure there are many atheist who just accept there is no god, just as there are many christian who accept there is a god, without question. however, if you were to ask an atheist who hasn't considered the possibility of a god, i doubt you'd get as many close-minded responses as you would from christians who haven't considered the possibility of no god.

beta, the only questions i've seen atheist ask over and over are the ones which pertain to claims that people going to hell for not believing. you can't blame someone for asking for proof of these ridiculous claims.

shoby, so saying i'm an atheist means i've closed my mind to the possibility of there being a god, and saying you're a christian means you've opened your mind to the idea that one exists? are you sure it's not the other way around? couldn't i just as easily say, atheists have opened their mind to the possibility that god doesn't exist, and christians and other theists have closed their mind to this possibility?

beta, the open minded question has been asked several times today by the same person. you show me an atheist doing that and i'll just as annoyed with his or her questions as i am with the constant moronic ramblings of searcher. deal? it's one this to ask a question that's on everyone's mind, and i don't blame christians for that. but when you're the only person who keeps asking the same stupid question over and over again, i think that merits someone saying something. if i kept getting on here and asking hey, you say god exists. and then my next question five minutes later is the exact same question. and i kept doing that over and over again, i'd expect someone to say something.

I think you make a valid point.

Atheists, certainly have no monopoly on closed mindedness. Christians and atheists can be equally closed minded, or equally open to new ideas. Neither perspective dictates how receptive one is to contradictory ideas. What determines that is ones personality.

When Christians deride atheists with the label of being closed minded, they generally do so out of anger that we would have the gall to disbelieve in something they cherish to such a high degree. So far from being a disparagement of how we think, the Christian charge of closed mindedness is more done out of sheer frustration that we don’t accept far fetched ideas as easily as they do.

So it is ok to question Christians or other religions. But if I decide to question atheist on some of the things that they claim to be (open minded, logical), then that implies that I am somehow wrong for doing so? I should just let them be...even though in my opinion they are making false claims?

Good job in being a hypocrite, but I will still ask my questions.

You can whine all you want about me questioning atheists...but until they give valid evidence for their claims...I will still question them. Does that sound familiar?

Good point, I've often wondered how atheists can claim to be open-minded when they keep asking the same question over and over and over again here at R&S.

EDIT: Wait...so we can't blame atheists for asking the same question over and over again, but if a non-atheist does it, then we can blame them. OK, got it.

EDIT: Point taken.

Open minded is looking at the universe and trying to understand it. Its not following just one book and believing that it holds all the answers in just one word, god.

Open minded is not just learning about one side. It's about taking in what you can in a wide variety of topics to make your decision.

Open minded is thinking for yourself. Just because people around you are one way doesn't mean you have to follow them. WE all have a mind to think on our own. People should use it and except and understand change.

I think it is a good think to keep asking the same question over and over again if it is a very important question. I do not know if it has very much to do with the open-mindedness though.

I think it is a good thing to be able to change your mind.

The very act of labelling a person "Atheist" means that you have already decided their beliefs for them, which is a sure sign of a narrow mind.

i agree. Most christians are not asking questions as much as they are condemning atheists. I think most of the atheist questions are just to further their understanding and not to "convert" as a christian is trying to do.
