I am having 4 adults and one child for Thanksgiving dinner. HOWEVER I want tons left over- and the men I would count as two people. What size turkey should I buy? I was thinking 18lbs. I can freeze the leftovers etc. Is this too much? Also how long does it take to thaw a turkey this size?

The rule is 2lbs per person + left overs. If you want a lot left over then you are great. I've also read that 24 hours for ever 5lbs of bird. So plan plenty of time.
One year mine wasn't completely defrosted & I ran hot water in it.
Good luck & find a good recipe!!

I thought that as you have never bought a turkey before that you might be unsure on roasting times The timings below are based on an oven pre heated to 425 Fahrenheit or 220 Celsius (approximately) Gas Mark 7, the first half an hour of cooking should be at these temperatures. These are then reduced to 325 degrees Fahrenheit 170 Celsius or Gas Mark 6. Turkey Sizes, Servings and Roasting Times 6 – 8lbs 2 1/2 – 3 hours (serves 4 – 5) 8 – 12lbs 3 – 4 hours (serves 5 – 8) 12 – 16lbs 4 – 5 hours (serves 8 – 11) 16 – 20lbs 5 – 5 1/2 hours (serves 11 – 13) 20 – 24lbs 5 1/2 to 6 hours (serves 13 – 16) The amount of turkey that you are serving to your guests depends on the accompaniments and additional food that you are serving. The above servings are based on 1 – 1.5lb per person. Turkey that is 6 - 8 lbs will taste just as good as those that are larger. We had 6 adults and 1 child last year and got an 18 lb turkey, and there was definitely lots of turkey left over. It takes at least 3 days to fully thaw a turkey that size. Hope this will help..

Figure one one day in water to thaw an 18# bird. You should have lots of leftovers from a turkey that size with that many people. A ten or twelve pound bird may suit you better.

Yes it is too much, I would say you should get a 10-12 lb turkey. The thawing and cooking of a very large bird is not easy, so make your life easier and get a medium sized turkey.

18 lbs is most likely good if you want leftovers. It will proally take some hours to thaw it out maybe 2. Happy Thanksgiving!

That sounds like a good size and also there will be cooking instructions in with the bird, I would let it thaw from like Tuesday, just put it in a pan with a little water and leave it in the fridge.

If you like more dark meat, drumsticks and thighs, then maybe you should get 2 smaller turkeys. They'll also thaw and cook faster than one big one.

18-20 lbs would be ideal if you like left over turkey sandwiches.
