The first time I met someone who was openly an atheist was only nine years ago.

I come to Y/A, and atheists are everywhere (weeds! . . . . . kidding!).

Are there more atheists, are more people comfortable with talking about it publicly, or is it simply because we're in a "safe" environment?

Agnostics, too. My peeps!

Jesus taught that drinking was a sin-oops, wrong. His first miracle was turning water into wine. Jesus taught that partying was a sin-oops! wrong again, the pharisees criticized him for partying with the wrong people. Jesus taught that homosexuality was a sin-WRONG again. Jesus never said anything about homosexuality even though it was common practice in Greco-Roman society. The sins Jesus talked about: judging others, condemning others, relying on wealth instead of on God.

I see it so many times that it's wrong because the Bible says so. Hmm, what about the millions of people on Earth that don't read the Bible? Or that can't read the Bible? Other religions? Does it mean only well read, literate Christians are homophobes?

I was going through my book shelf, and I picked one of the Bibles at random(We have a few in the household) It is my stepfathers. This is what the first page read.

"The -------- Education Committee present you with this Book, the most valuable thing this world affords, desiring that you use it whilst at school and retain it when you leave. Herien is the wisdom which will lead you to all truth, provide comfort and guidance and teach you the whole duty of man."

I went to the same school some years later, they do not give them out anymore. This book is around 40 years old. This was given to people in his day when they joined the school.

Your thoughts?

Phil 2:12) -…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

(Rom 2:5-6) - …the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

(James 2:14) - What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?

(Mt 16:27) - For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

(2 Cor. 5:10) - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Man, they are not real. I was reading an article about it on the yahoo home page, and I was thinking to myself that this was a bunch of crap. UFO's are made by the US government to go spy on other countries. Like in 1976 in Iran. During those times, the relationship between Iran and the US was very tense, so they built a spacecraft to go spy on that country. I cannot believe yahoo would waste their time posting that on their homepage.

The concept is pretty amazing really. All responsibility for all things that exist lies with another being. Sure, you have free will, but all mistakes can be forgiven, all shortcomings are trials and you will be rewarded for dealing with them, all flaws are not your fault. Your responsibilities lie with a perceived deity, and the doctrine of that deity. All concepts of right and wrong are already laid out, you don't have to think for yourself. Only act accordingly, and put all matters in your life into the hands of that deity. If you do that, life will turn out perfectly.

I can't imagine the lack of stress by having the concept of a perfect god managing everything. If only it were really that easy.

But that there are multiple universes and galaxies with inhabited planets like ours? If not then how do you explain why God would allow an enormous void in space with no other life force except ours?

At the end of the last book, Potter ends up knowingly sacrificing his life to save others, dies (sort of), comes back to life, and ends up defeating evil.

Did anyone else see this as sort of vaguely similar to the Jesus stories?

After reading it, I wondered if maybe Rowling decided to take one last big jab at the fundamentalists by equating Harry Potter with Jesus in an allegorical sense.

I'm taking into to both German and Latin. I've never taken either language, but I have so many varied interests, and I want to learn the basics of a few (ok, more than a few) different languages, but some people are saying that it's going to be too much for me. It's my second year in college, and I've been doing pretty well with grades and stuff, but people say that foreign language classes are different. I start my day with latin, and then I have to go down the hall to go to my german class... they both meet for an hour every day, is it really going to be too much? Do language classes give more homework than other classes?

As in other religions, there is a Day of Judgment, after which unbelievers roast in Hell for eternity, while the souls of believers are rewarded by transport to a sensual paradise with food, wine and pleasures of the flesh in ample supply. Husbands and wives are also reunited in paradise.but correct me if i am wrong but i thought muslims didnt drink[like wines not alchohol]
