"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
-Stephen Henry Roberts

How do you argue that Roberts is incorrect? To put it in a percentage, any religion is very, very unlikely to be correct, sinply because one of them (supposedly) has to be. The infinite amount of unthought of possible religions must also be taken into account.

On this site there appears to be the same old blah, blah from the same people! They answer questions with answers that have nothing to do with the questions but that just re-itterate the same points that they have made before! (over and over and over again)

You know who they are and so do they!

When atheists and theists debate the existence of gods, atheists generally ask for some sort of proof of the god or gods that the theist claims exist. Why do they do this? That is a difficult question to answer because while it is true that atheists often ask theists for proof that their god exists, sometimes they shouldn't. Asking for proof may end up confusing the important issues, causing distraction, and leading the conversation away from where it should be.

If that is the case, why do some atheists always ask for proof? I think that there are two reasons — one a question of semantics and one a question of principle. First, however, it would be easier to explain what atheists should be doing and why.

If a theist claims that a god exists, an atheist is justified in asking for that claim to be supported. Support is not the same as proof, although proof is a type of support (a very good type, in fact). Claims need to be supported if they are to be taken seriously.

For the record, I too speak my mind, and have been told I'm like this person. What is your opinion on this?

Hafsa, like A'isha with whom she became close friends, was never at a loss for words, and was not afraid to argue with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who was content to allow her to say what she thought. One day, while speaking to Hafsa's mother Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I think I shall so and so." Whereupon his wife replied, "But it would be better if you did such and such." "Are you arguing with me, woman?" said Umar who was a fierce man who did not expect his wives to talk back at him. "Why not?" she answered. "Your daughter keeps arguing with the Messenger of Allah until she upsets him for the whole day." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) immediately put on his cloak and went directly to his daughter's house. "Is it true that you argue with the Messenger of Allah?" he asked. "Indeed I do."

I read this in a book. For instance, "I'm pretty hungry." could be pronounce in two ways, hence two different meanings of 'pretty'.

For those who think you don't need to follow the law of the old testament please note:

[All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. "It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)

Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17 NAB)]

Earth is still fine, so the old testament is still to be followed my dear friends!

When I was younger I was really involved in my church. My family went through some really rough times, though, and in the end I stopped believing in God and started drinking, doing drugs, having sex...but I'm at a point in my life where I want to believe again. I'm trying to clean myself up, but how do I do this? I'm not really sure where to start.

I didn't post this qustion to be preached to. I have confirmed for myself what I had thought though. Religious people are always right, forget logic and reason, just condemn everything that's not 'Godly'; to Hell with justice and common sense.
I wanted intelligent people's answer to a fundamental question. 'Why do people choose to be slaves to religion'. Not internet evangelism! And, I used the word slave to indicate the fact that religion forces you to act and think in a certain way...get it?...der??? just as a master decides what a slave can and can't do.
If you can't see that religion enslaves you there's no hope. Example: "I love my son but he is gay. The bible (master) says that's bad, therefore I cannot love my son." It's not rocket science people.

I'm thinking of becoming religious. Can anyone suggest a good religion for me to join. I'm looking for something quite mainstream.

I'm not to fussed about times, but I can't do Monday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Also, I'm not very good at getting up early.

Do any of them offer AirMiles or anything similar; voucher books, etc.? Which one offers the best pension programme? I hear that one of them is offering a free Panasonic Blu-Ray player to every new member, is this true?

I heard from Christians that the New Testament law was meant to replace the Old Testament law which automatically means we shouldn't question the atrocities committed in the Old Testament or the laws about people who work on the sabbath being put to death or homosexuals being killed and simply ignore them.

It was perfectly okay to do that back then. It was a different time. Stop living in the past atheists and just accept what people tell you.

Agree?

This requires a little reading but i think that it illustrates a very interesting point about how christians answer questions.

I find that very often, if you leave the slightest loophole in your question, christians will cling to it like white on rice.
and then when you rectify that loophole in a restated question, other christians give intriguingly different answers.

Now take this question i asked:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At94kcNjcZWHKHhcKVWDqCDsy6IX?qid=20070726223906AAkeJ4O

the christian answerers basically accepted that my sociological premises were fairly true, but they felt that it "all made sense in the end" because "some people can't get over themselves" and thusly "failed the test".

When do you think the world will end and why?

2007-08-01 20:09:51 · 15 answers · asked by SmEllY! 6 in Religion & Spirituality

People blame God for bad things, but most of them are not servants of God. If you are not a servant of God, why should he protect you from danger? God doesnt even promise protection to his servants. He promises that we will be hated by the world, because we are not of this world. Satan is the God of this world.

I do a good amount of lurking and some answering. In the religion and spirituality section it seems that SOME in the atheist group tend to "bait" Christians with sometimes silly yet inflammatory questions. I dont usually see a bunch of questions titled: "All Christians answer now, are all atheists going to hell?" But I do see stuff like: "Why are Christians so stupid believing in fairytales" etc. So peanut gallery, what is everyones take (all beliefs welcome) on this issue?
