I took calculus in college(not sure why) and got an A in both semesters but I never understood what it was good for. I just memorized the equations and plugged them in. What does calculus calculate?

I remember reading the back of a book a few years ago in a bookstore. The author (I can't remember who or the book's title) proposed the theory that life can exist on a flat planet if it has walls (like the sides on a box) and it's open side faces its sun. This position is supposed to hold in oxygen and everything else necessary to life. The author further suggests that this planet can be many times larger than Earth.
I've always thought the author was just kidding.

A male clasps onto a female until she releases her eggs for him to fertilize. Apparently in some species this can last for weeks. Why is it advantageous for males to behave this way? Why should females permit males to clasp them for so long?

I understand the concept of distance and displacement, but if you walk this rectangle, the position of your body is ultimately changed from its original position when standing at the starting point. This change in position would amount in even the tiniest amount of displacement no matter how much you try to stand in the exact same place. I think it would be physically impossible to stand in exactly the same place as one stood after walking a rectangle? Could someone explain this to me?
-From someone who has no formal education in physics.

I,ve read about it in a few science articals, but who actually believes or wants to see us bring back to life extinct animals that lived in a completely different world than we do now? I guess it would be intresting to see living animal such as: mammoths, sabortooth tigers and other more peace-ful animals, but surely scientist wouldnt be stupid enough to ressurect dinosuars would they? Or are they greedy enough to be ignorant like the scientist in Jurassic Park an d cuase potential disaster? What do ya'll think?
