5. Two at the front, two at the back and then one in the middle (in-between them). It doesn't mention any other ducks so it can't be anything else.

It could be 3 if it said "There are 2 at the front. There are 2 at the back. There is one in the middle without them in a list.

It could be any odd number above 5 if it said "Billy sees 2 at the front, 2 behind and 1 in the middle" as it doesn't necessarily say that's what there is, but what Billy saw.

Oh, and Steve-Bob. One is the grandfather (and so is the father of the father), one is the father (and so is the father of the son and the son of the father) and one is the son (and is the son of the father).

Therefore the grandfather and the father are the two fathers and the father and the son are the two sons.

2 in front of what? 2 behind what? The question as it stands has unlimited answers, as you could have 2 in front of 19, 2 behind 19, and one in the middle of the 21. It works for any odd number.

Ask a better and more precise question. A correctly worded question of this type is:
Two fathers and two sons go fishing. Everyone catches a fish, but only three fish are caught. How is this possible?
