I live in San Antonio, Texas. Some of our elected officials recently went to Phoenix, AZ to check out a "Tent City" they have in their prison system.
The inmates live in tents, No A/C, use Port-o-potties, they get two meals a day, brunch and dinner, not real good food, No television, they rough it.
They say it is curtailing second offenses. In San Antonio, they are looking at it because they believe, and I agree, that they are having people commit crimes so they can be put back in the system, have a roof over their heads, 3 meals a day.
I think it would be great. Why should I work hard every day to keep a roof over my head, feed my family, etc. and these criminals have it better than me. I don't think it's cruel either.
Of course some of these newly elected Democrats (Bleeding Heart Liberals) would not approve.
